If you want to prove that you are qualified to do something then nothing beats a publicly verifiable record of you doing something. This is why github, and other public projects, are a great way of showcasing skills for people in IT.

The nice thing about Github, in particular, is that you can you use it for pretty much anything, including things that aren't code and hosting a static website about yourself.
