Living life to the fullest is the ultimate form of self-discipline.

Stop foolishly comparing who lives the longest! The real winner isn't the one who lives like a machine, but the one who lives a fulfilling, joyful, and insightful life.

You probably know someone like this: the "health guru" on social media, getting up at 5 AM to run, eating only boiled vegetables for every meal, barely daring to drink water. At first glance, their medical reports look perfect, like a perfect score on a test, but look at their face—their brows are furrowed, and they're anxious and can't sleep over the slightest thing. This kind of approach, living a life of "life imprisonment" in an attempt to prolong life, is truly trading one's soul for years. Little do they know, squeezing out all the joys and sorrows of life, leaving only an empty shell to live a few more years, is torture, not life at all.

Take my neighbor, Old Liu, for example. He's truly "ruthless" in controlling his blood sugar. He never shows up for gatherings with friends, and he guards his house's hidden good wine and food more closely than a thief. I once ran into him downstairs, carrying a freshly braised pork knuckle, his eyes fixed on it, unable to hide his craving. He kept saying, "Self-discipline is asceticism," but his heart was already withered. This kind of life, seemingly exemplary, was actually causing him internal damage.

On the other hand, our nearly seventy-year-old Sister Wang is a completely different story. Although her legs aren't particularly nimble, her mindset is as carefree as a child's. She can spend hours basking in the sun on a park bench, watching passersby, and be happy for ages. She often says, "When you're in a good mood, no illness will bother you, and you can even throw the medicine bottle aside." You see, one is a long life lived in a gloomy, relentless struggle, the other is a joyful, carefree life—the quality of these two is immediately apparent.

Being too fixated on what is considered "correct" makes you lose sight of the joy of the present moment. I remember once, around 10 pm, I ran into a few young people at a barbecue stall who had just finished working overtime. Even though I'll have to watch my boss's mood tomorrow, I still enjoyed barbecue skewers and beer today, laughing without a care in the world. That moment of warmth and contentment was more real than any health expert's grand pronouncements. Happiness is actually these seemingly "unconventional" moments; it's the lubricant for a tightly wound spring, the flavor enhancer for a monotonous day.

Many people make a foolish mistake, always pinning their hopes for happiness on the future. Waiting for retirement, waiting for wealth, waiting for leisure, forgetting that happiness also has an expiration date. Instead of sighing and worrying, it's better to learn from those who live life with clarity. They know how to find joy in the mundane, sleeping in all weekend, or taking a spontaneous drive to the countryside. These seemingly "wasted" moments are precisely the best medicine for nourishing body and mind.

In middle age, don't waste time obsessively worrying about lifespan. Rather than being a longevity champion with a gloomy face and daily medication, it's better to be a carefree, healthy, and happy ordinary person with a good appetite.

Life isn't about enduring it, it's about living it. Open your heart, eat and drink what you want, don't mistreat yourself, and don't neglect your feelings. Living long is a gift from heaven, a matter of luck; living happily and joyfully is a true skill you earn, a source of confidence.

The greatest achievement in this life isn't how many years you've lived, but that in your old age, when you look back, a smile can grace your lips, and you have no regrets. Let's live at our own pace, however comfortable we are—that's the greatest respect we can show to life.
