The Academy and the Gatekeepers (FMO 1818 2-20-26)
For the self-styled awakened, the university is supposed to be the last bastion of critical thought. Yet, it is here that the language of the new empire has entrenched itself most deeply. Academia has become a priesthood of obscurantism, where complex ideas must be rendered in a specific, sanctioned dialect to be considered valid. To get funding, one must frame research in the language of "sustainable development goals" or "impact investment, "terms handed down by supranational NGOs and foundations. This is linguistic gatekeeping. It ensures that the only knowledge that circulates is knowledge that speaks the language of power. If you cannot translate your ancestral wisdom or your community's oral history into the jargon of the Western academic paper, it is deemed folklore, not data. As Elizabeth Chukwu observes, English has become a "gatekeeper, determining who has access to opportunities, education, and economic mobility" globally. Within the ivory tower, this dynamic is magnified, creating a class of thinkers who speak only to each other, in a code that excludes the very people they claim to study.
The Dinner Table Dialectic
The final frontier of this linguistic imperialism is the home. It manifests in the generational divide between those who speak the "prestige" language and those who speak the heritage language. In diasporic communities, parents are often encouraged, by media, by educational systems, to speak to their children in English (or the dominant colonial language) to ensure their "success." This severs the linguistic chain of memory. The child learns that the language of the grandmother is a private thing, a relic, while the language of the screen is the language of the future. This is the quiet violence of neocolonialism. The personal becomes political as family communication is infiltrated by external hierarchies of value. When a child corrects a parent's grammar, they are not just learning syntax; they are internalizing the empire's ranking of tongues, placing the colonizer's version of expression above the familial.
