Introduction of Tokyo (東京紹介）：For anybody interested in Japan & its history/culture (001E)

The 1st step of many of foreign visitors to Japan will be Tokyo.
So, I would like to first give you an overview of Tokyo, refering
to the map here.
The Tokyo station, along with the Imperial Palace, is the center
of the map. In the eastern side, there is the Sumida River, some
10km from the Tokyo station and near the river, the "Sky Tree" and
"Asakusa" are located.
日本を訪れる外国来客の第一歩は、多くの場合東京かと思います。　
そこで先ず東京の概要をご説明をしたいと思います。　
地図をご参照下さい。
東京駅と皇居が中心と考えて頂くと良いかと思います。　
東に隅田川が流れていますが、沿岸のスカイツリーや浅草は東京駅
から大体10km程度の範囲で、逆方向の新宿も約10kmです。

Some 10km west of the Tokyo station, is "Shinjyuku".
On the map, two JR (Japan Railway) lines are shown in red, namely
"Round Line=Yamate" and "Central Line" between Tokyo and Shinjyuku.
"Yamate Line" runs among some busy spots as Ueno, Ikebukuro,
Shinjyuku, Shibuya and Shinagawa, while "Central Line" starts the
Tokyo station and goes west to "Shinjyuku".
You may go to Shinjyuku from the Tokyo station using either "Yamate"
or "Central", however "Central" takes you there much faster as only
15 minutes by "Rapid" train, while if you ride "Yamate", it takes
some half an hour, as "Yamate" runs the entire circle of some 35km
in an hour.
MAPの赤線はJR(JapanRail)の路線で、東京駅から真直ぐ西の新宿へは
中央線(Central Line)、もう一つの周回しているのが山手線(YamateLine)
で、特に山手線は多くの繁華街を結んでいます。　
例えば上野・池袋・新宿・渋谷等で、新宿は山手線でも中央線でも
行けます。但し、山手線一周は約35kmで約1時間かかり、新宿はその
半分なので、東京から新宿まで、約半時間かかりますが、中央線で”
快速(Rapid)”に乗れば半分の15分で着きます。

Once you grasp the entire Tokyo area with the map, you may further
study the details of each spots , utilizing other map as "Subway
Network Map", which I will explain in the next post.
In many cases, Tokyo "Subway Network" is faster and more convenient
to reach a certain places.
For instance, if you go to "Ginza" or "Asakusa" your choice is to
use the subway. Also if you move to "Ikebukuro" or "Shibuya", most
probably, the subway is faster than JR line.

と思いますが、実際に行動される場合は、もっと便利な地下鉄網が
発達していて、最初は少し煩雑に見えるかもしれませんが、慣れると
大体、都心の何処にでも割にスムーズに辿りつけます。

The "Subway Network Map" looks rather complicated but I strongly
recommend you to study it in advance of your actual move.
I assure you that onece you get used to it, you can efficiently go
anywhere in Tokyo downtown area.
Frankly I live a bit away from Tokyo and come to Tokyo only a few
times a year. Whenever I am in Tokyo, I never forget to have the
"Subway Route Map".

と思いますが、実際に行動される場合は、もっと便利な地下鉄網が
発達していて、最初は少し煩雑に見えるかもしれませんが、慣れると
大体、都心の何処にでも割にスムーズに辿りつけます。
実は私自身、東京から少し離れた所に住んでおり、東京には年に数回
しか行きませんので、東京では、この地下鉄路線図は手放せません。　
次回は東京の地下鉄路線網についてご説明をしたいと思っています。

The best season to be in Japan is either spring, "cherry blossom"
or fall, "leaves change color" season and I would suggest that you
will not plan to come over to Japan in the very hot and humid summer
and in the cold winter.
Also I believe that Tokyo's rush hour is infamous and inhuman and
I recommend you to try not to be involve in such terrible experience,
as in photos below, eagerly hoping that your time in Japan is
enjoyable and fruitful.
その前に、日本を訪問される場合、季節は春か秋、蒸し暑い夏と寒い冬
は避けた方が良いと思います。　
更に東京では、朝夕のラッシュが凄まじいので、午前7時～9時と夕方5時
～8時の時間帯の地下鉄も含めて、電車のご利用はお薦めしません。　
下は東京の週日毎朝のラッシュ光景です。皆さまの日本滞在が楽しく
実りある事を願いつつ・・。
