No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent. (John Donne)

I might be in the philosophical corner with this one, because this is a little bit deep, and not a typical quote that I would share. Normally, I write about such things that your destiny is in your own hands, and what you do today will impact your life tomorrow.

But, what is this all about, that we are not an island, all to ourselves, but instead - that we are a piece of a continent?

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent. (John Donne)

I believe this quote deals with the way we look upon ourselves and the world around us. It is easy to sit and just look at ourselves, and look at who we are, and then consider ourselves to be the center of the world. In a way, we are, because we are only able to fully live as we see life through our own eyes. But, even though we are an entity ourselves and we are ourselves, we have to understand that we are part of a continent. In other words, you might be an island, but you are still a part of a continent. What does that mean?

We are meant to work together, think together, and serve the good of others.

If we look back to the old Greek culture, then the cities were built around a thought that everyone could come to the agora, to the main square, and have their saying. Later this had to change, because a democracy in which everyone wants to say what they think will be a mess, and most people are not even capable of expressing their thoughts. That is why we had representatives of the people.

No matter what, it is about understanding that we are part of something bigger and that we have to look beyond ourselves!
