This would be possible currently (without forking). When Steemit creates an account, it can specify authorities. One could be itself, and the other can be the password the user gets. Since the two keys would have equal access, the user could revoke Steemit’s access, if they desired (advanced users might want to do this), and Steemit could remove their own access (after some days).
