Samalanga is one of the sub-districts of Bireuen District that play an important role in Aceh's history.

The famous hero of Samalanga is Pocut Meuligoe, a woman from the village of Gampong Baro who leads the Samalanga youths striking the Dutch at Batee Iliek, now a popular tourist attraction in Aceh

Currently Samalanga is known as the City of Santri because of the many dayah / pesantren that grow in this area. Among these are Dayah MUDI Mesra which has existed since the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda, and was first led by Faqeh Abdul Ghani, to this day held by a charismatic cleric in Bireun, Teungku Hasanoel Bashry. In addition to MUDI Mesra, only a few meters from the dayah stands Dayah Ummul Ayman, under the leadership of Teungku Nuruzzahry.
