Beautiful Sunday: fortune telling for the New Year: ไปไหว้พระและเสี่ยงทายสำหรับปีใหม่

This is my entry for #beautifulsunday hosted by @ace108. Time really flies by very quickly for me, I think I have lots of days before the New Year. So, today I am in a panic as it’s already the second week of December. So, I’d better go to the temple to ask about my ‘fortune’ or ‘trends in my life next year’.

Many Thai people would go to temples to make merits (good karma) by paying respect to the Buddha statues, making donations, doing voluntary work in temples, offering food to monks and novices. We believe that making merits is very auspicious for a lucky New Year. My own custom is to ask my favourite Buddha statue about the fortune including trends in my life for the following year. My experiences over the years have shown me that certain Chinese shrines and temples do give incredibly accurate predictions. So, I would go to these places once a year to request a fortune-telling or prediction before the end of December each year.

This way of asking for one’s fortune prediction at sacred shrines and temples came from Chinese culture which fits in very well with the superstitious nature of Thai people. So, whenever I need some kind of clue or answer to a very confusing or threatening situation with uncertainty, I would seek the help of ‘fortune sticks’ or ‘Seam-si’ at the temple. It is customary for me to enquire about the trend of the country in the New Year.

First of all, I would do my prayer in front of the Buddha statue and sit quietly for a while. Then, I would form a short question in my mind. After chosen the jar of fortune-sticks’ or ‘Seam-si’, I would close my eyes while shaking the jar moderately with the question in my mind. If there are more than one stick falling onto the ground, it means I need to concentrate on my question and make the question very specific. The answer would be reflected in the one stick that has fallen out of the jar.

There is a small cabinet filled with numbered sheets of predictions nearby. I just take the sheet with the corresponding number on the stick. If the answer happened to be very negative, people would put the sheet back and ask for guidance on how to cure or redress the misfortune. Another round of shaking the ‘Seam-si’ would usually give a gentler answer or warning; we would follow through with a small donation and offerings of flowers to show our gratitude. It is not advisable to ask the same question more than twice, and we should refrain from asking trivial or abstract questions for fear of disturbing the divine too much!

วันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมาเราไปไหว้พระทำบุญ เพราะว่าใกล้จะสิ้นปีแล้ว และช่วงนี้อากาศดีเหมาะกับการไปเดินเล่นตามวัด เรามีธรรมเนียมที่จะไปเสี่ยงเซียมซีก่อนสิ้นปี เพื่อถามถึงแนวโน้มทางสภาวะการณ์ของบ้านเมืองในปีหน้า ว่าจะมีเหตุการณ์ที่น่าหวั่นวิตกเกิดขึ้นหรือเปล่า เราจะได้ตั้งตัวระวังแต่เนิ่นๆ เราจะมีวัดที่ค่อนข้างแม่นในการให้คำทำนายอยู่สองแห่ง แม่นขนาดที่หลวงพี่ที่เรารู้จักจะถามว่าปีนี้ไปถามหลวงพ่อมาหรือยัง ท่านหลวงพี่ประทับใจในความแม่นตรงประเด็นของคำตอบมาหลายปีแล้ว เราก็เกือบลืม เวลาผ่านไปเร็วมากในปีนี้ เรายังมีงานที่คั่งค้างตั้งหลายสิบอย่าง แต่ก็ดีใจที่ได้ไปถามท่านมาแล้ว พอเราไปรายงานหลวงพี่ ท่านก็ช่วยตีความ เราต่างก็ยอมรับว่า ปีหน้าประเทศไทยแย่แน่ๆ จะมีปัญหาและวิกฤตหลายเรื่อง

เราก็พึ่งเคยเจอคำตอบ บอกให้ปลงและยอมรับว่า ทุกอย่างเป็นอนิจจัง ทุกขัง อนัตตา ถึงคราวยากลำบากของประชาชนจำนวนมาก ซึ่งมิอาจจะหลบเลี่ยงได้ คนที่ถูกบีบคั้นและไม่เคยปฎิบัติธรรมจะต้องทุกข์มาก แต่หลวงพี่ท่านตีความว่า สำหรับคนที่ปล่อยวางได้ และมีปัญญาก็จะสามารถผ่านพ้นไปได้ เราอ่านใบเซียมซีแล้วก็ไม่สบายใจเลย อดเป็นห่วงญาติๆที่ทำแต่งานและไม่เคยศึกษาธรรมะเลยไม่ได้ คนที่มัวแต่ทำมาหาเงินเพื่อเลี้ยงชีพอย่างเดียว ไม่เคยทำบุญทำทาน หรือสนใจปฎิบัติธรรม จะตั้งรับกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่กระทันหันได้หรือ คนที่ไม่เคยผิดหวังเลย จะยอมรับกับความพ่ายแพ้ได้อย่างไรกัน คิดแล้วก็ต้องกลับมาดูตัวเอง เพื่อมิให้ประมาทเช่นกัน เราจึงพยายามตั้งอยู่ในศีลธรรม เพื่อเป็นเกราะคุ้มกันเราให้คลาดแคล้วจากภยันตรายทั้งปวง
