Hasty Generalization

in #esteem6 years ago

I recently almost has a fight with a lady when she came to my house and upon having a discussion with my friend immediately generalized me. She considers people from my tribe "Yoruba" as being lousy and insensitive. This was as a result of a collision she had at work with a colleague who was Yoruba and because of his insensitive nature she concluded that every Yoruba individual is insensitive and lousy. I found this rather offensive and insulting so I confronted her by correcting her notion.

Hasty Generalization

Hasty generalization is a falacy is which conclusion is being drawn without a concrete evidence or proof, its a bised form of judgment without thorough knowledge, understanding or research on the subject matter. Its also called a faulty generalization, biased conclusion and simply jumping into conclusions.

This has become a major issue is my part of the country and has gradually eaten deep into every aspect of life. An employer who's from the 'yoruba' tribe doesn't want to employ anyone from the Igbo tribe because its believed that they are money conscious and have a love for money. This have hindered so many of us from reaching heights that we should in Business, career and also relationships too.

Here are typical examples graphic examples

• You visit a country for the first time and the first citizen you met was rude and you send a message to a friend in your country saying everyone in that country is rude. Isn't that baseless?

• You got robbed by robbers who spoke in Hausa and you drew the conclusion that all Hausa's are thieves.

oh here's one

You were in a relationship with a jerk who cheated on you and you conclude that all guys are cheats... Hilarious!

• You run into a rough driver who happens to be south African and you decided that all south African drivers are rough.

As funny as this sounds we all are guilty of jumping into conclusions because of one harsh experience or another. We should always be careful to judge others based on one persons behavior its baseless and also limits you because gradually you grow into your conclusion and it becomes difficult to think or believe otherwise.
