RE: Butterflies in the garden

in #esteem6 years ago

It has been years since I have seen one in my yard, and seldom even along the highways. They do love the flowers at the gardens, and it does make me wonder if they are being raised and released there. We did the circle tour around Lake Superior a few years ago and specifically watched for Monarch butterflies and we never saw one the entire trip.

Sounds like a mystery, nevertheless, it is a very positive sign, since Monarch butterflies are threatened species, just like bees. Apparently best way to help them is to plant milkweed. Clearly, you have flowers in your garden, they also like.

We have always had road ditches full of milkweed...these days more and more invasive species ate taking over. Giant hogweed, wild parsnip, garlic mustard and the patches of milkweed are becoming fewer and fewer. My cousin is growing some and promises to plant some of it here. Do what we can, I guess!
