TRIBE WHERE HUSBANDS OFFER THEIR WIVES FOR SEX AS ENTERTAINMENT TO VISITORS A SIGN OF THEIR GESTURE

As hilarious as the title of this post sound, as bizarre and immoral as the title of this post may look it is true that in some part of the world a certain tribe offer their wives to friends as entertainment and a sign that the are humorous and also as a way of fostering relationship between them.

This is irritating you may say because it might appear to be against your believe or teaching but to this particular tribe it is a norm and tradition. This people overtime have been able to preserve their cultural belief that even western civilization could not influence or alter their practice.

While sex has been preserved and ordained by God for the purpose of reproduction and should only be enjoyed by couple however the people of ovahimba hold a different view as they see sex as a way of showing respect and a catalyst to build a stronger relationship with friends.

The ovahimba and ovazimba tribe are a small settlement in Kunene and omusati region in northern Namibia with a total population of about 50,000 people; they are well known for their polygamous practice whereby a man marries more than one wife.

The tribe is nomadic in nature as their wealth is usually determined by the number of cattle owned, and like every other person their woman engages in their daily activities of milking cows, taking care of children and other duties while the man hunts for the family which sometimes the often stay away for days.

The people of ovahimba have a particular cultural practice where the husband offers his wife to visitor for sexual pleasure i.es when a visitor comes knocking the husband shows his approval and pleasure of seeing his guest by giving him the okujepisa omukazendu treatment, which literally means that the man wife is given to his guest to spend the night while the husband sleeps in a seperat room in a situation where there are no rooms the husband of the wife will have to sleep outside while the guest enjoy the night with his wife.
This tradition has been handed over from generation to generations and the people believe that it is beneficial to the communities as it reduces jealously and fosters relationships.

It is said that while the husband offers the wife to his visitor the woman has little or no opinion in that decision as she is required to be submissive to her husband’s demand though she has option of refusing to sleep with him has to sleep in the same room as the guest also she is entitled to give her friend to her husband’s visitor in case she opted. Other than this they are also red skinned which is called otjizer paste (a combination of butterfat, omuzumba scrub and ochre) , its function is to protect their skin from the sun and insect bites, they are also guided by the belief that the color red signifies “earth and blood” rather than take their baths the women take a smoke bath and apply aromatic resins on their skin.
While their female child approach puberty they are often given out by their parents for marriage as they female child have no option in this regards

What has continue to remain a puzzle to me is how the people have been able to handle to situation of men abusing the cultural practice by taking advantage of some pretty women and often visit or let alone how they manage to control intake of pregnancy after having sexual intercourse with a visitor well I guess that is why it is called a culture after all.
