"Taking a step to improve the resiliency of the internet infrastructure was something we saw as a positive for the entire global network, and a positive for people who rely on their digital devices for so many aspects of their daily lives."

The 660-mile Marea cable that Microsoft and Facebook funded and stretching between the US and Spain are completed. The cable is 16 million times faster than an internet connection at home.

The high-capacity cable between the US and Spain, named Marea, and which Microsoft and Facebook jointly funded, are completed. The cable that goes under the Atlantic is 660 miles long and stretches from Virginia Beach in the United States to Bilbao, Spain.

The bandwidth is at 160 terabit per second. According to Microsoft, Marea is thus the highest capacity underwater cable under the Atlantic. "160 terabit data per second is more than 16 million times faster than an average internet connection at home.

Facebook's network manager Najam Ahmad says:

"Marea helps us connect people faster and more efficiently. A robust connection can help a variety of people to build relationships and collaborate between countries and across cultures.

The project was published in May last year, and the construction itself began in August 2016 by the construction company Telxius. In July this year, it reached Bilbao.
