The First Epistle to Timothy is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to his beloved disciple Timothy, who was likely appointed by Paul himself as bishop of the city of Ephesus. In it, the Apostle to the Gentiles gave his disciple a series of spiritual recommendations for the administration of the Church in that important city.
The first epistle begins by teaching that Timothy's mission in Ephesus was to prevent the community of believers from following strange doctrines; this most likely referred to the teachings of the Gnostics, who were very popular at that time. The teaching of dangerous heresies was the main problem during the early Church.
And then Paul wrote to Timothy in his epistle about the essence of the Christian message: being a spiritual leader in the Christian faith is not an easy task, and it requires a lot of wisdom, because faith is destined for the hopeless, the oppressed, and those who make error a habit as a product of ignorance. And on this point, the apostle Paul gave his own example; he who had been a persecutor of Christians had been called by Jesus himself for the conversion of pagans to Christianity. And with these words, the apostle set himself as an example of this teaching: "This is a statement that can be trusted and deserves complete acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the foremost sinner" 1 Timothy 1:15.
And then Paul went on to explain that the wisdom needed to manage the community must be transformed into great patience to endure the difficulties of a world given over to the needs of the flesh, and so he expressed this spiritual fact: "I was treated with mercy so that Christ Jesus could use me, the foremost sinner, to demonstrate his patience. This patience serves as an example for those who would believe in him and live forever" 1 Timothy 1:16.
The faith in Jesus, according to Paul's thinking, is this: a sum of wisdom, patience, love, and unconditional forgiveness, since these are the gifts strictly necessary for the development and sustenance of Christian worship. And this was the recommendation that Paul left for Timothy.
