Jesus is the Son of Man: If you don't have faith in me for who I am, you will die, and your sins will not be forgiven. John 8:24

The Gospel of John relates that Jesus preached in Galilee and that in that region he performed many miracles, such as the multiplication of the loaves and the healing of a sick man at the pool of Bethany. It happened that his family and friends invited him to the Feast of Tabernacles that was being held in Jerusalem, to which Jesus replied that it was not his desire to go to Jerusalem because his time had not yet come. Finally, the gospel recounts that family and friends went to the celebration, and Jesus secretly followed them.
But Jesus, as the gospel relates, could not go unnoticed for long because he went to the Temple and began to teach, which led many people to wonder where Jesus' wisdom came from. And this began to cause a scandal among the people who wondered who Jesus was, because they did not know if he was a prophet or the Messiah who was to come. And Jesus, when speaking about himself, as the Gospel of John relates, was always very reserved because he ran the risk of being accused of heresy and thus being condemned to death, something that his most bitter enemies, such as the Pharisees, wanted.
When Jesus publicly referred to himself, he simply said he is the Son of Man, and he also proclaimed the seven "I AM" statements. This was actually a play on words to explain that he is the personification of God's perfections; Jesus is "God" who becomes "Son of Man." With the seven "I Am" statements, Jesus also explained that he is the personification of wisdom, joy, and righteousness. This was Jesus' way of telling the simple and common people that he was the expected Messiah and the fulfillment of the covenant between God and King David.
And while in the Temple, Jesus taught his enemies, the Pharisees, that he is the way to true life, the eternal life, and the redemption from sins. That is why he condemned them and told them that they would not receive that life and that forgiveness, with these words: "If you don't have faith in me for who I am, you will die, and your sins will not be forgiven" John 8:24.
With this, the evangelist John taught that the faith in the word of Jesus is the difference between the slavery to sin and the true life and freedom of the children of God that is related with the eternal life that comes from above.
