The faith of John: I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. John 1:26
The Gospel of John is a gospel that begins in a unique way; the Gospel of John begins with John's testimony about Jesus, and most likely the name John refers to John the Baptist, who preceded Jesus in the announcement of the Kingdom of God, and baptized the Lord with water. And John, in this testimony, although he did not mention Jesus, it is true that the Baptist affirmed that the word and the light became flesh, that is, they were personified. With this testimony, John announced the "Son of Man," that is, the personification of God's perfections.
And John the Baptist knew something very particular about this "son of man," although John gave a baptism of repentance with water in the Jordan, this "son of man" would come with a new kind of baptism, a baptism in fire and in the holy spirit. Those who were baptized by John did so because they were seeking a change in their lifestyle, and baptism with water in the Jordan River was, in this sense, a rite of purification. But the "son of man" would come, according to John's testimony, with something different, something that would give birth to the "new man", the man freed by grace from the slavery of sin.
And this testimony of faith of John the Baptist began to take shape when the prophet baptized Jesus. The Gospel of John recounts that before Jesus was baptized, some Pharisees approached John and asked him who he was. He replied that he was the one who was to precede someone more powerful than him. And with these words, John spoke of Jesus: "I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. Though his ministry follows mine, I'm not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal" John 1:26-27.
John was a person full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and although his end was a tragedy before powerful men dominated by error, John the Baptist, with his common sense, bore witness to that which is the only thing worth fighting for, the Kingdom of God, the dominion or government of the divine perfections among men.
