Goaty babies, 5 days old!!
It's amazing how fast they find their feet, and get moving. They were about a week premature, and had 2 dead siblings in utero, so this bouncy fun stuff, is a miracle!!
And then..... the real trouble starts. Babies put everything in their mouths. Goat babies chew. On. Every. Thing. Once they trust you, they start nibbling on you. Your boots. Your pants. Your fingers. Your hair. You get the picture. This little test nibble is only the beginning. We don't discourage it yet, because they need to start sampling mommy's food when she eats. But boy is it a hard habit to break. Super hard.
Now when we start milking after the antibiotic course is done, we will be milking inline with the kids, so that they get the milk they need and we have some to drink. Willow typically peaks at about 1.5 gallons a day with babies on her as well, so probably closer to 2. The babies are only drinking from one teat at the moment, so mommy was uncomfortable. So I milked about 5.5 cups out of the one teat they haven't been using, and then put the babies on. It's still impressive as all get out to see that delicious white stuff, and we have sorely missed it. Very happy it is milking season again, here at Caldwell Acres!!
