Mustard crop is a proud part of agriculture
- Timing
Choosing the right time for harvesting mustard is crucial. If harvesting is delayed, the pods (Siliqua) dry out and burst, causing significant losses.
Identification: Harvesting should begin when the mustard pods and stems are 70% to 80% golden yellow and the grains feel firm when pressed.
Moisture: The ideal moisture level for harvesting is around 20% to 25%.
- Harvesting Process
In India, mustard is usually harvested in the morning. Due to morning dew, the pods are slightly softer, reducing the risk of grain shedding. Farmers cut the plants close to the ground with a sickle. After harvesting, they are tied into small bundles and left to dry in the barn for 4 to 5 days.
