The lapwing can be called "nature's alarm" or "field watchman".
The Red-wattled Lapwing, scientifically known as Vanellus indicus, is a very active and alert bird native to the Indian subcontinent. Its distinctive, shrill, "what-did-you-do" call makes it easily recognizable in rural areas.
Physical Appearance and Identification
The lapwing is approximately 32–35 cm long. Its most distinctive feature is the red fleshy skin (wattles) in front of its eyes, which gives it the name "red-wattled."
Its head, throat, and upper chest are black.
The upper body is light brown, and the underside is completely white.
Its long, slender legs are bright yellow, which help it run quickly through fields and shallow water.
