Properties of horsetail.
The continuous use of medicinal plants dates back many years ago, that is, their use comes from ancestral times, where man had to learn to differentiate all types of plants that were suitable for human consumption and which were poisonous when consumed. , the learning was acquired by means of tests and observing the reactions that it caused in the organism of the person.
Through time, the search and effort has made man deepen his knowledge and thus turning on the medicinal properties as well as the toxic properties of each plant. The horsetail is a medicinal plant with a wide therapeutic use, among its most important therapeutic actions it can be highlighted its use to prevent and treat problems of fluid retention, diuretic, very helpful against
genitourinary problems such as: kidney stones, urinary tract infections, cystitis, urethritis, and inflammation of the bladder or prostate, among many other properties that we will describe later in more detail for greater knowledge, but also has negative properties of which we must be very careful at the time of consumption, among them we can say about its very prolonged use can cause severe irritation in the digestive tract.
comes from the plant species Equisetum arvense is an enduring plant that can reach up to 2 meters high. It has a generally simple stem, cylindrical, up to 1 centimeter in diameter, erect, green, articulated, with longitudinal grooves, it is usually hollow in the center. It has small leaves, with a single vein, united forming a pod around the stem. The pods measure 1 cm in length and width a similar measure.
Horsetail needs a lot of moisture to grow. We recommend drip irrigation and if it is hot, water daily. Always avoiding the encharcamientos of the earth. The type of soil you need is slightly acidic, a pH of 6.5 and 7.5. It is a fast growing plant, so you should prune it regularly. You can plant it from seed and if it meets the necessary conditions of space, light and moisture will germinate quickly and begin to grow. Actually there is not much secret to cultivate horsetail: it is a plant that needs moisture, grows fast and can even become a problem in your garden because of the ease with which it spreads and invades the land.
Horsetail is a plant that grows easily in damp places and that has become one of the most used medicinal plants in natural medicine. It is attributed to be one of the best healing plants thanks to the many therapeutic properties very good for our health, the most outstanding are its diuretic and depurative actions for the organism. It also has properties that are not for medicinal purposes as well as aesthetic properties and properties in agriculture.
I call my attention to how it can be used in Agriculture:
In agriculture thanks to the equisetonine that produces a toxic effect in large quantities, it is used as a natural fungicide and insecticide against different types of insect pests, thanks to this property its use in agriculture is extended to control various types of crops.
Horsetail can be used under different procedures such as: tea or infusion, tizanas, macerations, juices, salads, baths, gargles, inhalations, enemas, syrups, oils or ointments, tinctures, poultices, among others.
The use of prolonged horsetail is not recommended due to its high toxic content of some components it has. It is not recommended either the use of horsetail in pregnant women or in the period of lactation since it has toxic substances that breastfeeding can be transmitted to the newborn and cause a serious damage in the organism of the same.
Other contraindications that may occur and be careful is in people who have some type of disease that will be described below: People with gastritis, people suffering from heart or kidney failure, vitamin B1 deficiency, potassium deficiency, people with hypertension, people with problems of alcoholism, people with diabetes.
