The sewing machine

image

Is a machine, for domestic or industrial use, that mechanically executes the stitches, usually using two threads, the upper thread threaded into the needle, and the lower thread coming from the bobbin.

The first sewing machines, appeared in the nineteenth century, were mechanical and moved manually; nowadays they are usually electric and are increasingly using electronics, for example memories to drive complex patterns or even to embroider sequences of letters.

The first truly practical sewing machine is attributed to a French tailor from the Lyon region. He filed in 1830 the first patent of a "sewing machine" built of wood, a continuous thread, chain stitch, sewing 200 points per minute. He made 80 copies to honor an order for uniforms of the army.
Many inventors of this period rely on the reproduction of the movement of the hand, which limits the seam to a simple needle.

In 1834 the American Walter Hunt is the first to use a bobbin and therefore uses two threads. In 1851, Isaac Merrit Singer perfected a machine that he had to repair, which enabled him to file a first patent on August 12, 1851, and to create the same year the IM Singer & Co, which sells sewing machines for domestic use. brings him success.

The manufacture of French sewing machines was going to be brilliant under the Second Empire: Peugeot, Hurtu, Journaux Leblond, Brion, Reimann. The bobbin sewing machine, operated by foot with a pedal, was patented on May 12, 1868 by Pierre Cobet. Patent and name were sold to the Peugeot family.

At the Paris Exposition of 1878, the Legion of Honor was awarded to Benjamin Peugeot, maker of the sewing machine.

In 1871 the German Kayser imagines a device that allows to move the needle transversely to obtain a zig-zag seam. In Alsace Caroline Garcin, imagine a spring motor, because, at that time, electricity could only be produced by bulky and expensive batteries.
In 1873, Ward invented the ancestor of the free-arm machine used by the Swiss brand Elna to sew sleeves and pant legs.

In 1937, Pfad added to this machine an engine.
The sewing machine has revolutionized sewing by making it faster and cheaper.

Do you know that there are now mini sewing machines that you can slip into your bag to go on vacation or that you can use quickly just to make the edge of pants or curtains?

On one hand, it allows you to sew your clothes anytime and anywhere. On the other hand, it does not take place and is therefore perfect for those who live in a studio, a university room or just a small apartment.

It is so handy that it can sew hard to reach places. Save time for example by avoiding disassembling your curtain installation when a seam has dropped. Instead of undoing the rod and bringing bulky curtains to your table, sew directly onto the curtain, around the rod.

Despite its size, it is powerful enough to sew thick jeans as well as fragile silk. This makes it an incredibly powerful device for an almost insignificant size.

It usually works with batteries but it can also be connected to the mains. It measures approximately 210 x 73 x 50 mm and weighs an average of 250 g
