#9:The Voice talked for hours and hours

..and so it went. The Voice talked for hours and hours. Shelby absorbed information like a desiccated sponge absorbing water. He saw pictures in his mind that helped to explain the narrative. The first pictures were crude but they got better. They evolved into animation, then video, then 3D holography complete with surround sound. Anything Shelby didn’t understand he asked questions about. Shelby had always been an ardent Science Fiction reader. SF had vaccinated him against Future Shock.

Good thing that.

"The next threat is drowning.” the voice interrupted itself. They had been talking for hours if not days.

Drowning?” Shelby asked. The floor had been damp. Now it was covered in inches of water.

"Yeah." The voice was no longer distracted. It seemed to be giving Shelby it’s complete and undivided attention."Rainwater. The roof caved in.”

A picture appeared in Shelby’s mind. A zombie-fied insect was hovering over the hole. Shelby saw what it saw.

"New Feature?” Shelby asked the voice?

"Yup...since you don’t get out much I needed a way to find out what’s going on around us. I needed to know the lay of the land more or less. All those zombie bugs were just sitting there. It didn’t take much to tweak the programming on some of them a bit. We can use some of them for surveillance drones.” it said.

"As you can see instead of keeping water out , the cave in roof is funneling the water in. It’s acting like a catch basin and collecting rain. We’re at the lowest level so it’s all coming here. This place is filling up. That presents a problem. We are still trapped. I’ve still got a ways to go absorbing the rest of those legs. Hopefully I can get them all sucked in before your drown.” the voice said.

"Fine...fine,” Shelby said. "Now go on with what you were saying earlier. You were just getting to the good part. You were explaining molecular electronics?”
