Challenge to be a Supervisor for The Production of a Documentary Film

Being a supervisor in the production process of a documentary is the thing I loved. This work I began since 2015, exactly one year after I produced a documentary film titled Teungku Rangkang. Teungku Rangkang is my first documentary.

Here I want to share the story as I supervise one of the documentary production titled Kupiah Riman, a documentary produced by Aceh Documentary. The production of this film is part of the annual Aceh Documentary competition titled Aceh Documentary Junior.

I would accompany two high school students who are directors of the movie Kupiah Riman. The Aceh Documentary limits the supervisory space in this production process. This is so that the novice director really learns from the pre-production to post-production process.

However, instead of making supervision work easy. Documentary film supervision is required to control the footage they shoot, certainly will not be forgiven by the Aceh Documentary if there is a shake, damaged, or no-cinematic footage. Similarly, the audio recorded by the microphone condenser. Footages that will be processed on the editing table must match what they write in the script.

Despite the tough challenge, this is where I learned to make decisions quickly when it turns out the reality that we face the field (when shooting) changed with what has been researched and written by the director in the script.

While supervising the documentary titled Kupiah Riman, I faced another thing. Not on the film, but on the psychology of the two directors. Those who just got this hard work this time to make sure the film is emotionally unstable. At the time of the shooting, they argued. Me, as a supervision is responsible for divorcing them.

So, at that time I had to control my own emotions to make the atmosphere neutral. Being professional is a demand in the production process of a film. It aims to produce great work. There, the new learners become directors learn from their experience. The goal is, they will be professional when producing films with big companies later.

Menjadi seorang supervisi dalam proses produksi sebuah film dokumenter adalah hal yang paling saya sukai. Pekerjaan ini mulai saya tekuni sejak tahun 2015, tepatnya setahun setelah saya memproduksi film dokumenter berjudul Teungku Rangkang. Film Teungku Rangkang adalah film dokumenter pertama saya.

Di sini saya ingin membagi kisah saat saya menjadi supervisi pada salah satu produksi film dokumenter berjudul Kupiah Riman, sebuah film dokumenter yang diproduksi oleh Aceh Documentary. Produksi film ini adalah bagian dari kompetisi tahunan Aceh Documentary yang bertajuk Aceh Documentary Junior.

Disini saya akan mendampingi dua orang siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas yang merupakan sutradara dari film Kupiah Riman. Aceh Documentary membatasi ruang gerak supervisi dalam proses produksi ini. Hal ini bertujuan agar sutradara pemula tersebut benar-benar belajar saat mulai dari proses pra-produksi hingga post-produksi.

Namun, bukan membuat kerja supervisi menjadi mudah. Supervisi film dokumenter dituntut untuk mengontrol footage yang mereka ambil, tentu saja tidak akan dimaafkan oleh Aceh Documentary jika ada gambar yang goyang, rusak, atau tidak sinematik. Begitu pula dengan audio yang terekam oleh microphone condenser. Footage-footage yang akan diolah di meja editing harus sesuai dengan yang mereka tulis di script.

Walaupun mendapat tantangan yang berat, disinilah saya belajar mengambil keputusan dengan cepat saat ternyata realita yang kami hadapi dilapangan (saat shooting) berubah dengan apa yang telah diriset serta ditulis sutradara dalam scriptnya.

Pada saat menjadi supervisi untuk film dokumenter berjudul Kupiah Riman ini, saya menghadapi hal yang lain. Bukan pada filmnya, tetapi pada psikologi kedua sutradara. Mereka yang baru kali ini mendapat pekerjaan berat membuat film pasti emosinya tidak stabil. Pada saat shooting, mereka berdebat hebat. Saya sebagai supervisi bertanggung jawab untuk meleraikan mereka.

Jadi, saat itu saya harus mengontrol emosi sendiri untuk bisa membuat suasana menjadi kembali netral. Bersikap profesional adalah tuntutan dalam proses produksi sebuah film. Hal tersebut bertujuan untuk mengahasilkan karya yang hebat. Disanalah, para siswa yang baru belajar menjadi sutradara belajar dari pengalaman mereka. Tujuannya adalah, mereka akan profesional ketika memproduksi film bersama perusahaan besar nantinya.
