Hi,

even if we don't have any streaming service account, or cable television at home, we catch from time to time a good film. I've made recently a review about a very funny, but sad film, The Death of Stalin, which can be read in this post.

I will turn today, for another one, that somehow impacted me by the sheer human trauma of some recent times. It is another film about the filth of communism, and the pain it caused. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is a masterpiece of realism. By the way, there is no mention of communism in the whole film, only the time of the happening.

As I don't want to get into spoilers, I will go briefly over the plot. The story is about two room colleagues, where one is having an abortion in a state that has forbidden it, to increase natality. There is the abortionist, brutal humans that operate in an unsanitary environment.

The entire camera setup, the static scenes, simple and full of pressure, show the last two years of communism, where the population is oppressed, poverty all over and people need to keep their stuff together despite the encumbering of their living.

One needs to see it, to feel it. Preferably in a cinema, on a big screen, without popcorn, as this is not a popcorn flick.

The experience is haunting with its minimalistic use of action, but with a high focus on character development. It is a tough watch, raw and not sugar-coated, which will leave a mark on anyone.

It was the first Romanian film to be awarded the Palm d'Or, the highest distinction from the French film festival from Cannes. I would say, that compared to the Oscars, at Cannes, one can have the chance to see real cinematography art. Speaking of Oscars, this motion picture changed the way the award and the nomination for the best Foreign Firm have been awarded. Winning the Palm d'Or and not getting the nomination at Oscar, can tell a lot about the quality of the Academy Awards.

The critics and the public had made a very good review on it, as it has an 86% score on rotten tomatoes from the public. This tells a lot about the impression it leaves.

How about you? Tell me a film that impacted you.
