The Greatest Showman - Be Extraordinary!

in #film8 years ago (edited)

The Greatest Showman is an original musical starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Keala Settle.

It is inspired by the story of P. T. Barnum, a man who is mostly remembered for working in the entertainment business as a promoter in the 1800's and founding the Barnum and Bailey Circus. This movie celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

Also, the songwriters who worked on La La Land have had a hand, if not two in writing the songs for this one.

This is a movie that will appeal to a wide range of audience for the wide variety of themes touched upon in its story.
Dreaming and fulfilling those dreams. Overcoming of struggles. Being an outsider, not belonging anywhere. Learning to accept and love yourself for who you are. Doing what you do for the ones you love.

Every single one of those above hits home to me. And some of the quotes or lines from the songs are hitting home even harder:

"Every night I lie in bed
The brightest colours fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
"

"Noone ever made a difference by being like everyone else."

"They're gonna laugh at you anyway. Might as well get paid for it."

And just like a million dreams have kept me awake at night in bed, so has the hit song "This Is Me". It speaks to anyone who has ever felt like a nobody, has ever been bullied or has felt in any way unaccepted. It is a celebration of not only accepting and loving yourself for who you are, but also owning it with pride.

I would urge everyone to open their minds up to a little movie magic and let themselves be absorbed in this ambassador of kindness and acceptance that this feature film is.

Even going behind the scenes reveals the story behind the story that is no less extraordinary than that which we see on-screen.

It took about 7 years for our very favourite Wolverine to get the idea of this movie musical become a reality. After finally having set everything up for a demonstration to get the movie green-lit, Hugh Jackman had to make a doctor's visit beforehand. An appointment to remove the cancer tissue from the skin on the area of his nose. Before leaving for the project presentation, the doctor says one thing to Mr. Jackman: "No singing!"

And so, Hugh gets another singer to sing his parts for him while doing the talking bits himself. The magic happens when the already emotionally loaded group of people in the room notice Hugh Jackman speaking along the first lines of one of the last songs in the show From Now On. He goes on to sing the first line. And the second. And he doesn't stop.
By the end of the rehearsal, his nose is bleeding. As far as I know, there was no permanent damage caused by this.

Below is a youtube clip of the above described rehearsal moment:

I just want to say that for me this movie has given an uplifting and emotional start of the 2018.
I wish you all a little more magic in your lives, as well as finding that something or someone who will lift your spirits the way this movie did for me.
