the fin was a separate machine that wasn't originally intended to be used as much as it was. It was a far more simplistic thing because the submarine attached to it didn't need to look like a shark at all, it just had to be a dark color so it wasn't visible from the surface. Yeah, the behind-the-scenes stuff is REALLY interesting for this movie.
