The Father of American Landscape Painting - George Inness

Hello Dear Steemit Friends ! Today I would like to present you a famous American tonalist painter - George Inness, Landscapist who carried the Hudson River tradition from the mountains to the cultivated plains and rejected the panoramic vistas for intimate views. He introduced the colouristic lessons of Delacroix and the Barbizon School into American art, blurring the focus of both light and detail in a hazy softness.

George Inness was born in 1825. He was one of the most influential founders of Native American Impressionism, though he violently rejected any attempt by critics to link his work with the French school. The successful sale of his early works enabled him to visit Europe in the late 40s. He lived for a long time in Rome, visited Paris and London. In European art, this period was marked by the emergence and development of a realistic national landscape painting created by masters such as Constable in England and Corot in France.

Inness mature style developed slowly but his final adoption of restricted views painted on small canvases in summary impressionistic style catapulted him to fame and fortune. A full member of the National Academy of Design in 1868, he was admired by the new generation of European-oriented artists and became co-founder of the Society of American Artists in 1877. Deeply religious, like the Hudson River artist Inness saw landscape painting as a form of religious expression and attempted through his art to connect the "visible upon the invisible".
