The Most Finnish Easter Thing

Most Finnish people are pagans even though we belong to the Evangelical Lutheran church, but we ”celebrate” easter so we can have a few extra days off from work and eat easter eggs. Some might say Mämmi is the most Finnish easter treat, but I don’t actually know anyone who eats that shit, everyone just eats chocolate eggs.

There are a million and one different kinds of chocolate easter eggs, but there is one that rules them all;

Karl Fazer's Mignon egg

This chocolate egg is like no other, the crust is a real chicken egg, and obviously not to be eaten, and unlike other chocolate eggs that are often hollow, this is filled to the brim with almond-hazelnut chocolate nougat. It was created by Karl Fazer in 1896 and has been a favourite ever since. Among others, Tsar Nikolai II was a fan of the Mignon eggs and had them transported to the court every Easter.

Occasionally I eat the basic Kinder egg and have tried Töhnämuna (dip eggs), but they are trash compared to the Mignon egg. I shall now devour my 52 grams of Mignon, and maybe go and buy another one.

Ps. Does anyone know what eggs have to do with easter? Jesus and chocolate eggs together seem like a bit of a reach.

Sort:

Would it be possible to ship a Karl Fazer's Mignon egg to Denmark without it melting? :P

I dont think I have ever seen them in Denmark, but I wanna try!

Even if it melts, it's not like it's gonna go anywhere, the chocolate is inside the egg :D

Thats perfect! :P

Eggs at easter probably comes from the fact that christians used to fast until easter. When it was time to break the fast all the hens had already ramped up their egg production.

So an excess of eggs lead to our easter-egg tradition..

In other news:
My father used to give me one of those Fazer eggs every easter.
They are fun to open and the chocolate is great!

Pictures! :D

Excellent review @eveuncovered, now for many Easter eggs is only a symbol and therefore probably for many there is no difference what the egg will be!

Could be that the eggs were originally part of some pagan tradition, but then Christians made it about Jesus - like Christmas (or whatever it was called before Christ) was originally a pagan tradition, but then Christians slipped the J in there. Easier to transform existing traditions than create new ones, I guess. Sneaky bastards...

Yeah I know the Christians have had a habit of stealing our pagan celebrations, but I have no idea where the egg tradition comes from.

@markkujantunen, you have any inside knowledge about this one?

Maybe it's like the wafers and wine. The blood and body of Christ. So eggs are birth and... yeah, i just extrapolated that without researching it. ; )

If I remember well from the times we had Religious Education in primary school (I am a Greek Orthodox), the egg symbolizes Christ in the tomb. We hardboil and paint eggs red and on Easter Sunday we crush them in pairs saying "Christ has risen" and the other person replies "Indeed he has risen". The red color is for the blood of Christ and the crushing of the shell is symbolic for the defeat of Death, just like Christ managed to get out of the tomb by breaking the stone that was covering the entrance. Mind you that the egg is a symbol of life both because of its nutritional value and because it bears a life in it.
Now I'm guessing the chocolate is just our greedy nature, but there might be some tradition behind it as well.

Isn't cool to look for customs, traditions and their origins among different religions and cultures?

Oh! And Happy Easter!!

That is very interesting, I’ve never heard of such tradition in my parts of the world. Thank you for sharing that with us, it really is cool to hear of these different kinds of traditions between different religions and parts of the world.

Have you tried Kalev chocolates :) ? they make also very good eggs :)

Hmm, it's Estonian chocolate? Sounds familiar so I might have tasted it but I don't remember.

YEs it is Estonian :) be sure to try.

I want chocolate!

Eggs, bunnies - bit tastier than crosses?

Much easier to sell than rusty nails and splintered wood. Also: are playboy bunnies good for easter celebrations?

Yes they are, you should put your outfit on asap :D

Wow that's cool! I got not egg this year 😒 💯🐒
