Anttilanmäki, Lahti

Anttilanmäki is a district of Lahti next to the railway station almost at the heart of the city, only on the south side of the track. The population of Lahti is 118,000. It is unusual for such an idyllic district to be located so close to the centre of a city that size.

About a century ago, it used to be on the Hollola side of the municipal border between Hollola and the then newly established city of Lahti. There was cheap unzoned land for the workers of Lahti who built their small houses in it. Anttilanmäki became part of the city of Lahti in 1933 at which time it was zoned. Anttilanmäki was about to be bulldozed in the 1970's but someone had the sense to give it protected status. Nowadays, it is considered a culturally significant built environment. Anttilanmäki is one of the most expensive districts of Lahti as can be expected both because of the proximity the city center (the market square is less than 1.5 km away) and because it is such a nice quiet neighbourhood.
