Blobfish
Blobfish
The Blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) became famous as the "world's ugliest animal," but this reputation is slightly unfair. Its famous gelatinous, "sad" appearance is the result of extreme decompression damage when it is rapidly pulled from its deep-sea home. In its natural, high-pressure habitat, thousands of feet below the surface off the coast of Australia, its body is a gelatinous mass slightly less dense than water. This allows it to float effortlessly above the seafloor, ambushing small crustaceans that drift by.
