My Secret(s) to Getting in Shape.

in #fitness6 years ago

So I just wanted to take time to write this post to help more friends wanting positive change in their lives when comes to health and fitness.

This book by Ben Greenfield, Beyond Training and his podcast, help me realize I can treat my body like a machine and “hack” it with supplements, nutrition, alternative condition, and cutting-edge sports science.

His book was an eye opener for me especially when I hit my early 30’s and trying to find ways to invest and hold on to my youth.

I always like having mobility and flexibility. If you live Oakland checkout Monkey Shala Yoga.

I spent roughly year learning yoga there In my mid 20’s and still use those practices today.

The Teacher/Owner, at Monkey Shala Tim Thompson, is a personality but changed my life and my body.

I have been lucky enough to not have any back pain or hip or knee pain, and I like to believe that is due to continually having yoga in my life and also having such a solid teacher for a year.

If money is tight or you don’t live in Oakland, I really liked following this Video, Power Yoga, by Bryan Kest, 3 weeks in and my flexibility had a noticeable improved.

I think you find bootlegs on youtube…its that old but Yoga is forever so…

I also supplemented yoga practice with Pilates for Core and back strength. I still even use this book Pilates for Men, written by Daniel Lyon. Both Men and Women can use this book, but I guess he wanted dudes to feel comfortable doing Pilates. I honestly can’t wait to do Pilates :)

I felt super uncoordinated the first week but within about 3 weeks and I could tell I was getting it.

When it came to lifting weights and combining it with nutrition and dieting I found this book, Bigger Leaner Stronger, by Michael Matthews really helpful.

It cut all the fluff from the fitness industry and was super practical.

They’re a lot of other rabbit holes I can go down, but I think what is listed above is a great start.

I also wanted to share a few of the supplements I take daily.

Men’s multivitamin, Essential Amino Acids, Vitamin B-12 and NAC.

Supplements for me fill the gap in what I may be missing when it comes to food.

Once I started to see my body as a machine that needs specific fuel to operate correctly, it became hard for me not to use supplements in my daily life.

Hope this post helps anyone trying to get in shape or bring change to their life.

Message me or write comments if you have questions that I can attempt to answer because I am not professional at this by any means.

Can’t believe I get to write this disclaimer, (I am laughing at myself) but consult a doctor or medical professional before attempting or trying anything listed above :)

Lastly, I would say find someone to workout with and bounce ideas off of. To tie this all back into my current boxing adventure. Having set goals with teammate has been beyond motivational.

I don’t think I would have nearly this much fun training by myself all the time.

Love Y’all,

Hope this helps.

-Douglas
