Emergency Plane Landing Shows Idiocy of Flat Earth Thought: Refuting Flat Earth Memes #1
Yes, in this day and age, people really believe in a flat earth despite two thousand years of evidence that disproves this. We discuss this in our post The Flat Earth Resurgence and Easy Disproofs Using Observable Reality. The movement is growing and, unfortunately, these people feel that they have extensively ‘researched’ the evidence, when what they have really done is watched a bunch of YouTube videos by a guru with effective cult mentality skills who makes a good-sounding argument with great leaps of logic to those who are unable or unwilling to do any research.
Because this unscientific cult is growing, and is influencing so many gullible people, I feel an obligation to help reduce the effects of this unscientific cult by demolishing their ridiculous memes and videos, as well as hoping that people will share these rebuttals and link to them extensively in order to help bring science-based rebuttals of flat earth nonsense to the top of the search engines to help those who might be contemplating joining this nefarious unscientific cult.
Emergency Landing in an Asia to LAX Flight
The first meme that we will easily demolish is the real life situation in October of 2015 where a Hong Kong to Los Angeles flight had a woman go into labor and give birth right on the plane. In order to get the woman and her child medical care as quickly as possible, the plane made a quite logical round earth emergency landing in Alaska. Unfortunately, the flat earth community picked up on this event and somehow determined that an emergency landing in Alaska would have been illogical on a spheroidal earth, and would have required the plane to go a great distance out of the way in order to land in Alaska. They THEN determined that it would have been a completely logical and natural stop to make on a FLAT earth, and therefore such a stop is evidence to support the earth is flat.

The Many Logical Fails in This Video
First Fail: The flight was from Hong Kong, yet not one of the videos made on this subject even bothered to correctly identify the beginning location of the flight. Some identified the starting point as either Bali or Taiwan, but none identified it correctly as Hong Kong. While this obviously does not prove they are wrong, it speaks to the general inability to do research, and the poor attention to detail the members of this community exhibit. Neutral investigative journalists with an eye towards accuracy and correctness of details they are not. They are only interested in jumping on the next idea that will confirm their bias.
In any case, the starting point is irrelevant to the argument, as the three identified starting points would make relatively close enough flight paths to make the same argument on either side.
Second Fail: At approximately the 1:11 mark on the video above, they use the image below to show how on a GLOBE, the flight path would not make sense. However, whether by design to fool gullible people, or by sheer ignorance of the person creating the video, they don’t show an actual globe or one of the many 3d interactive globe programs available to the public. Instead, , they show one of the many types of projection maps created from a globe, all of which are inaccurate because projecting a globe onto a flat surface has always and forever posed problems to mapmakers who must always create some sort of distortion in order to show the round earth onto a flat map.
So, their major error? Using a flat map as evidence that the flight path would not work on a globe. It’s quite literally a 4th grade science fair mistake...or an intentional deception. A logical thinking person would have used a GLOBE to show this information, or at least one of the many 3d interactive globes available on the internet, like the one that we’ll show later in this article.
Third Fail: At approximately 1:32, they show a DIFFERENT version of a flat map to again reinforce the concept that it would be out of the way to make an emergency landing from Asia to Alaska on a round earth. No matter how many flat maps they show, it will not be evidence of the reality on a globe. I’m not sure why this would be so hard to understand, but obviously it is to flat earthers.
Fourth Fail: At approximately 2:12 in the video, they then use a DIFFERENT flat map to ‘prove’ that the flight path would have been logical on a flat EARTH. This PARTICULAR map is quite hilarious, really, because it shows how incredibly ignorant and unable to do research flat earthers are. This map that they are calling a flat earth map is the one typically shown when doing flat earth models. I’ve shown it below.
There IS NO Flat Earth Map!
But what this map is patently NOT of, is of a flat earth. What this map ACTUALLY is, a fact that no flat earthers seem to be aware of, is a GLOBE! In fact, this map is well-known as an Azimuthal Projection Map. See our article on The Flat Earth Map is Actually a Globe to see how incredibly idiotic it is to use a globe projection map and call it a ‘Flat Earth Map’, when in truth, in the thousands of years of flat earth thought, the BEST map that the BEST minds have been able to come up with is a projection map of a GLOBE!
Yet this video proposes that THIS particular map is the ‘definitive’ map of flat earth when it’s simply a different version of a globe projection map than the ones they used previously in the video.
Fifth fail: What they failed to do was to compare the flight path on an ACTUAL globe or globe model. Again, whether simply out of desire to deceive, or out of sheer ignorance, we will never know. But you can look yourself on this 3d interactive globe of flights around the world and see for yourself that an Alaska emergency landing on a flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles is perfectly reasonable and is the logical shortest and most efficient course an airlines would likely take.
Here’s the images that I took on that site that you can do for yourself. It’s impossible to get Hong Kong and Los Angeles in the same frame on this interactive globe, so I’ve done it in two steps. First step is approximately Hong Kong to Alaska and the second is Alaska to Los Angeles. LAX is just a bit further south of my arrow so that I did not cover it up.

I was able to capture approximately Hong Kong to Los Angeles on in the same frame, and you can easily see that it is a quite straight shot.
So, as you can see, there actually IS NO flat earth map that anyone has compiled to even accurately be able to make any CLAIM that these flights make more sense on a flat earth map than they do on a globe. Additionally, these ignorant or deceiving people don’t even USE a globe to make their case, instead they use flat maps to show what is occurring on a globe! This is typical of the arguments of flat earthers, and these arguments are easily disproven with just a few minutes of easy fact checking.
Please Resteem and Upvote this article in order to get it shown to as many people who might think flat earth sounds logical. Getting these flat earth rebuttals high in search engine rankings can help to get actual scientific information out to people who are still able to be swayed by science, facts, and logic.
There was a French guy, cartographer from XVIII century who was using very simple but incredibly laborious process to measure the curved France/ Europe. His adventures were described in the series "The worst jobs in history". It look like this. Climb the hill, climb another hill (with the equipment), make the triangle, measure the angles. Repeat, climb new hills. And guess what - it was roooound. This experiment could be done today, by any Flat Earther. Try, measure and prove in a month or less. Ahhh, the ridiculous memes, logical fallacies, and insults begin. Give a valid rebuttal of flat earth arguments and you get an in insulting meme, and no actual arguments. In this case, you're just promoting your own content that is actually just an appeal to popularity instead of making an argument about the post.

Please, I'd love to hear why you believe that a guy interviewing a bunch of people who are unable to science or math changing to a ridiculous and easily rebutted world view proves that a flight landing in Alaska from Asia wouldn't happen on a globe earth.

I'm not confused. It seems you are, as all flat earthers must be.
Your confusion seems to be that a logical fallacy of appeal to popularity is any sort of argument against an emergency landing in Alaska from Asia. That 'was' the topic of my post, and you simply posted a bunch of videos about how and why people became flat earthers- which is an appeal to popularity and not a response to the topic, which is what flat earthers always do when one of their claims is rebutted because they can never ever admit that they are wrong even when it's shown conclusively that they are.
So, since you say that I'm confused, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt: how is a bunch of interviews about how people came to their belief system an argument against an emergency landing in Alaska being perfectly sound on a globe earth?
Or are you just posting off topic articles to promote your content, instead of having an actual discussion... as flat earthers constantly do in order to avoid actual discussion?

Upvoted as a flat Earther because I want to see invalid claims debunked on both sides of the argument. Not everyone is getting their information strictly from YouTube. Many people are researching and doing tests for themselves which will ultimately either prove flat Earth or reinforce the globe model and find a better way to teach it. Either way, NASA needs to be held responsible for the pending chaos. If we had just one believable real photo of the Earth from space (not a composite or artists conception of data) this whole thing would have been over before it started. The flat Earth movement started for a reason and time will tell what the true reason is.
I appreciate the upvote. Hopefully you feel the same way when I drop this truth bomb on you. If you are truly a seeker, this should make you question your belief system ENTIRELY. But if you are merely confirming your bias, you will likely ignore it, as flat earthers do, because..... for accepting such a failed and easily disprovable model, they simply cannot be truth seekers. One can be a globe SKEPTIC and be a truth seeker, but not a flat earther, as it's so easily and handily disproven by thousands of bits of inconvenient facts that flat earthers MUST ignore in order to be flat earthers.
That's why they never want to PROVE the earth is flat, because they can't. They go against thousands of years of science (that they do not even bother to look up) and THEY have the 'burden of proof' to prove the earth is flat, but they never do. They simply use bad math and science to put the globe in doubt. But they NEVER EVER pay attention to the thousands of reasons why flat earth is a FAR FAR worse model. Instead, they accept it unquestioningly.
A RATIONAL position might be something like, "I have a LOT of questions about this globe earth model, but the Flat earth model obviously doesn't work. So, in the meantime, I'll just keep questioning globe earth and try to understand why the model doesn't seem to be working. Maybe there is something I'm missing, or maybe it's neither flat nor round, or there is some other explanation for both models to seem to have so many problems that I might be missing".
It's completely irrational to have 'questions' about a globe earth, but then wholeheartedly ACCEPT a model that is provably FAR FAR worse... and then pile on all sorts of incredible non-science based explanations on top of your failed model to force it to 'fit' into your bias.
It's IMPOSSIBLE to do 'tests' on a failed model. What these people are doing when they do these 'tests' on a failed model is confirming their bias. They are literally PRETENDING that they are doing 'tests'.
It should be fantastically easy to come up with a flat map of a flat world when we have all of the GPS coordinates and distances between points already mapped out for you. The problem is.. is that we don't LIVE on a flat earth. That's why the globe model works so well, why the math for it is built into every GPS system in the world, as well as air autopilot systems, driverless car autopilot system, ship autopilot systems, handheld navigation devices, and every smart phone. And that we live on a round eaerth is why flat earthers cannot come up with a map that even has correct distances between points.
Can you really not see how this is true? That in thousands of years, with all of the modern info we have, with Auto Cad, advanced graphics, computer programs with advanced math and graphics, universities with advanced mathematical programs, etc. that NO ONE has been able to put the math into a computer to get a flat map that is correct? It literally should be fantastically easy. A kid in high school who is above average and questioning the round earth model should have already done it by now. No need for any photos from space. The globe earth map was not created with photos from space. It was created long before even FLIGHT was achieved... because thinking people are able to put such concepts together... but I know you just mentioned that because flat earthers seem to be unable to make a point without bringing up NASA. It's a fallback non-sequitur to which flat earthers base their entire belief system.
Think about that for a minute... or a LOT longer than a minute. With all of the info on the planet at our disposal. With all of the GPS coordinates and known points, with all of the distances between points known.. flat earthers can't put that info into a computer program to come up with a MAP!
There is absolutely no need for photos from space for you to create a map. Seriously. I honestly can't even believe that you think you'd need photos from space to create a map when you have 100% of the information needed to create one in a computer program.
Hell, most of you don't even BELIEVE SPACE EXISTS! So your demand that you need pictures from space before you can make a map makes your map impossible! How convenient for you!
But please share with me why you think you need a photo from space to create a map? What information would that provide you that NOT having such information has brought all flat earth mapmaking to an utter halt without? All the while... millions are using speroidal math in their GPS's to get around the planet perfectly.
You see a dude with a hand-drawn map on a SQUARE piece of paper, with a square Antarctica/ice wall, not done by auto-cad or any other program that anyone can actually check his distances, drawn without longitude and latitude, without a scale of measurements... and you accept it without any question! LOL.
Not to mention that there are virtually NO Flat earthers using this map, but instead using the Azimuthal projection map for their thought experiments.
If this is THE correct flat earth map, why isn't even the FLAT earth community accepting this? (Hint: it might be because it's a hand drawn map on a square piece of paper.)
Also, it CERTAINLY doesn't explain and is in direct contrast to:
MIrror image sundials in northern and southern hemispheres
24 hour days at all the far outside points of his map, all at the same time on their summer solstice, while the CENTER of the map is in darkness during that time
The circumnavigation of Antarctica
The sun setting due west everywhere on the planet on the spring equinox
Star trails in the northern hemisphere going different directions from star trails in ALL countries of the southern hemisphere, and also different at the equator
Why people in the outside edge of that map see all the same stars, spinning in the same direction, but in the CENTER of that map, they see different stars spinning in the opposite direction.

Why the moon appears one direction in the CENTER of that map, but upside down at far outer points of the map.
and I'd have to see his model of the sun and moon over it to see if it explains seasonality, how the sun sets minutes earlier at the bottom of tall buildings, moon phases, etc.
But SOOOO many things still wrong with his map. For instance, until it's on a computer program with correct distances and latitude and longitude, there's no way to tell if it can explain current sea and sailing routes, flight routes, etc.
But it's VERY weird that you accept a dude on YouTube's hand drawn map as THE OFFICIAL MAP OF FLAT EARTH without even being ABLE to check distances, longitude, latitude and such... but REJECT OUTRIGHT thousands of years of science on the topic, accurate globes with accurate distances that explain all of the above, that GPS uses spheroidal math and helps millions of people accurately navigate the earth properly every day, and thousands of other phenomenon that we see every day.
See why you guys have no credibility? You require THOUSANDS of times more evidence for round earth as you do for flat earth. We have a model that explains EVERYTHING that I mentioned perfectly... but without even being ABLE to test this model, you accept it UNCONDITIONALLY as FACT and correct, even though the model CANNOT explain the things that I mentioned just on it's face.

Yup, did you see the recent tests using state of the art equipment from South America? They confirmed that the pieces of land that they were testing were indeed flat, there was no question about it. I think the documentary was called convex earth the documentary. Worth a watch.

probably because that is all we have to work with so far. Most flat earthers are aware that the maps are all projections of the globe.
What do you mean 'that's all we have to work with so far'? Flat earth belief has been around for thousands of years, and we know EVERY GPS spot on the planet and we know virtually EVERY distance between points, and those that we don't know, we can extrapoloate using SPHEROID MATH!
Without a correct model to work from, you cannot do correct thought experiments for ANY Of the other concepts that you are trying to 'prove'. It's a fourth grade science fair project fail to say that you KNOW your model is incorrect, but to do experiments from it anyway!
So, to say that you understand your maps are all globe projections, but to use them anyway, is really a huge failure on the part of flat earth thought. It says, "Yes, I know that we know all the points and distances on earth; yes, I know that we know all of the countries and their sizes. Yes, I know that we've had thousands of years to think about this. But we just aren't able to come up with a map other than a globe to work with. And we're still going to do flat earth thought experiments using a globe projection map anyway, despite the fact that NO thought experiment can be correct when the model we are using it incorrect. So, instead of focusing on making a correct map, which should be EASY since we have so much information about the world, we're going to repeat incorrect thought experiments over and over, and call you brainwashed if you don't accept them."

Who says people aren't working on a flat earth map/model that works? I don't see any problem with using something like the AE projection as a basic visual concept to help people understand the possibility of a different model.
Actually there is a map and another from different time periods oldest around 1000 years ago found in Buddhist temple recently, there you can clearly see the flat earth Antarctic surrounding it but also land outside of the wall, like how Admiral Byrd confirmed the US navy Admiral in the 50s.

I have questioned the globe. To conclude that I didn't, then post things that have ZERO TO DO WITH THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH is totally dishonest.
EVERYTHING the government says could be a lie... and we can STILL prove the earth is a globe with scientific inquiry... like they have been doing for a thousand years prior to NASA.
If you were 'doctor truth', you'd be able to separate out conspiracy theories from scientific inquiry. That you are unable or unwilling to do that means that you are either dishonest and only willing to confirm your own bias, or just unable to discern the difference in these two, entirely different issues.
Now, if i WERE using NASA as EVIDENCE of anything, then you could potentially prove my EVIDENCE is incorrect with the proper data, just like I did with YOUR evidence from the DogCam.

And again, DISPROVING one model and proving another are two entirely different things. You seem to think that if someone doesn't PROVE the globe model (to your satisfaction, of course, since it HAS been proven over and over), then the earth is flat.
It doesn't work that way. YOU need to ALSO prove YOUR model to make the claim that the earth is flat. But you will not do so. YOu simply DOUBT the globe model and ignore the dozens of impossibilities on a flat earth... like YOU even mentioned, 24 hour sunlight in Antarctica is simply impossible on ANY flat earth model.
You can BELIEVE that it's not on SOME fantasy model that has not been invented yet, but that is called faith, and not science. If you want to do faith, go to a church and talk about flat earth. I'm talking science here. And when it comes to science, EACH model has to be EQUALLY proven.
You saying over and over again that there is no curvature, when you can easily prove it yourself with a simple theodolite app, will never overcome the multiple impossibilities of a flat earth.

You mean the fake NASA pictures even they have come out and said they are computer generated, there is no real picture of the earth, that's a fact. Every single one are computer generated. From NASA own words. Also look at old photographs of the earth then new ones the land magically triples in size, it's comical. And these are the photographs people like to swear by and say "look a globe" meanwhile even NASA have said these are computer generated and no real photos exist. Fools will be fools.
