Once upon a time, a big trouble arose in the animal kingdom. The cause of the trouble was that a Hunter always came to the forest where they lived. No day passed without the Hunter shooting dead or injuring one animal or the other. The Hunter took the animals he killed home to his wife who prepared nice soups with them for him. He was a big problem to the animals.

"We cannot all die off like that! This must stop!" trumpled the Elephant one day. The Elephant, Who was the ruler of the animal kingdom, was very warried.
"Yes!" shouted the animals together. "We must do something fast to stop the Hunter from killing us."
"But what are we to do?" asked a nervous Squirrel.
"Let us see a wise man," Suggested the Elephant.
Maybe he could tell us what to do.
So the elders of animal kingdom the Hippo , the Horse, the lion and the bull went to a wise man. The wise man told them that the dog was actually the cause of thier problem.
"How?" the animals asked in wonder.
"Dont you know that it is the Dog that shows the Hunter where to find you? Therefore, sell him at the market so that he will never lead the hunter to hunt you again."
"That's a brilliant idea!" cried the animals.
So when the animals came back from the wise man's house, they siezed the Dog at once and tied him up.
The Dog pleaded his innocence, but the animals disbelieved him. The next day, the Ape, wearing a human mask in oder to look like a human beign, went and sold the Dog in the market. But that same day, the Hunter went to the market to buy a new hunting gun. Fortunately for the hunter he saw the dog and bought it.
So before long, the Hunter started coming to the forest to hunt again. And this time, he came with the Dog. Whenever the pair entered the forest, the Dog, who already knew where each animal lived, would chase them out of thier hinding places for the Hunter to kill them.
But the animals did not know that it was the Dog who helped the Hunter to hunt them, because the Dog now looked bigger and stronger. The Hunter's wife fed him well with juicy bones and also put attractive decorations round his collar. So the Dog looked more like a gristly bear. Moreover, fear prevented the animal from looking closely enough at him whenever he came to chase them out of thier hiding places.
So the animals gathered again to find a solution to thier new problem.
"Since we sold the Dog our problem has increased," the Rabbit complained. "we are getting killed in larger numbers now."
"Who knows who is next to die," said the Squirrel.
"What do we do now?" the Elephant.
The animal reasoned together. They decided that they would send one of the birds to perch on the tallest tree in the forest so it might see the animal thst had been helping the Hunter to hunt them. They appointed the Crow, because of the loud noise she made, and told her to cry aloud when the Hunter and the animal comes so they could hide very well. The animals also asked her to find out what sort of animal followed the Hunter.
So in the evening, the Crow perched on to of the tallest tree in the forest. Shortly after, she was startled by the noise of footsteps bellow her. She peered down at the ground below her and sighted the Hunter and the Dog snooping around in the forest, Recognizing the Dog at once and she crowed aloud:

Crowww! Crowwww!
It is the Dog!
It is the Dog!
Hide yourselves very well.
The Dog is with the Hunter.
Hide yourselves very well
Crowww! Crowww!
Crowww! Crowww!
The animals hide themselves very well when they heard the crow's crow. The Dog searched in vain, and the Hunter was disappointed. But some of the animals were unlucky. *Edi*an animal that slept heavily, overslept, and was killed. The Squirrel was trampled to death while scurrying for safety. And out of fear, The Tortoise burried himself alive in the ground.
When the Hunter and the Dog were gone, all the animals gathered once again. They grieved over the death of thier folks, but they were a bit relieved for they now knew who it was that helped the Hunter to hunt them.
"So what do we do about the Dog?" They asked among them selves.
"Let us each contribute some money and buy the Dog back from the Hunter," the Monkey suggested.
Quickly, the animals agreed to the Monkey's suggestion. Every one of them paid a certain amount of money, and the money collected was given to the Elephant. The Elephant called the elders of the animal kingdom together, and they all disguised them selves by putting on human masks. Then they set out for the Hunter's house to reclaim the Dog.
But no sooner had the team arrived at the Hunter's house than the Dog found out who they really were. The animals where disappointed, but they still went ahead to make their request to the Hunter.
"On behalf of the elders of the kingdom," the Elephant said i plead with you to allow us to take back Dog in exchange for some money.
Before the Hunter could reply the Elephant, the Dog quickly answered for him.
"I wronged none of you yet you sold me off," he said. "But like Joseph in the Bible, it turned out for my good. Now I am in my Egypt where i am well cared for and need not look for dry bones anymore. I am happier to live with man, and I am his best friend."
On hearing this, the animals started blaming themselves for believing the wise man as they walked away in regret. That is why the Dog is a domestic animal until this day.
