Super Scrappy Steemit Sangria

in #food7 years ago (edited)

There is something satisfying about summertime leftovers. Be it burger, bun or bratwurst, casserole, cupcake or corn, an abundance of unfinished food is inevitable. My countertop is bountiful in over ripe fruit, half empty wine bottles and the refrigerator needs to be purged. My unwillingness to condemn these ingredients to the compost has brought me to share my super steemy solution to turning these scraps into something sweet.

Sometimes it is necessary to present a recipe in a way that can be perfectly replicated, however, this is open source sangria, feel free to alter, improve and share the source code.

Everything in this beverage is made from leftovers and the recipe includes as follows; strawberries, lemon, lime, frozen mixed berries, apple, three types of red wine, white rum, sugar, club soda and lemon-lime soda.

Begin by slicing the citrus, removing the ends and making 1/4 inch slices. Remove the tops of the strawberries and quarter until you have about a cup. Core the apple and dice. Set fruit aside.

The star of today's recipe was a gift from an old friend, a deliciously tart raspberry wine from George Washington's Mount Vernon. Combine what's left with an Italian red blend and half a bottle of 19 Crimes shriaz to total just over a full 750ml bottle. Add the rum and stir.

I added sugar to this recipe to balance the tartness of the raspberry wine, however if you prefer a dryer sangria it can be left out. Stir until sugar has fully dissolved.

Add all of the fruit to the solution slowly for full presentational impact, lining the sides of the pitcher with citrus slices, do not stir.

Let the mixture infuse and chill in the refrigerator for two to twenty-four hours, depending on how long you can wait for refreshment. Try to let it go as long as possible to let all of the sweet and soury ripeness of the fruit imbue the alcohol into a symphony of flavor. If you are serving a big group, add as much club soda as you like and toss in some ice just before serving. If, like me, you are serving two and want to preserve the beverage as long as possible pour into a fancy glass and top with the club soda and a splash of lemon lime soda, add a few frozen berries and a citrus slice. Enjoy this refreshing beverage and revel in your resourceful upcycle.
