Rice Crispy Treats

in #food7 years ago

Who doesn't like classic rice crispy treats? Stretchy, gooey marshmallow binds together the light and crisp cereal granules to form yummy morsels for kids of all ages!

Ingredients

  • 3/8 cup Margarine or Butter
  • 1 1/2 bags Marshmallows
  • 6 cups Crispy Rice Cereal (brand doesn't matter)

Directions

  1. Butter a 9 x 13 glass or metal pan.
  2. Melt margarine/butter over low heat in large saucepan on the stove.
  3. Add marshmallows to the saucepan. Stir constantly until marshmallows are mostly melted (small lumps of marshmallow keep the final product gooey!).
  4. Immediately pour over cereal and stir so the marshmallow mixture thoroughly coats all of the cereal.
  5. While warm, dump into pan and press to an even thickness.
  6. Lick the spoon (optional).
  7. Once cool, cut into bars and cover to keep treats from hardening.

Tips

  • Once coated, the cereal mixture is very sticky. To keep it from sticking to your hands, coat them in butter or cooking spray. Or you can coat a piece of aluminum foil or wax paper with butter or cooking spray and place on top of cereal...then press on top of foil/paper.
  • If you want to shape rice crispy treats, let the mix cool for about 10 minutes first. Then...
    • To use a cookie cutter, butter the inside and outside of the cutter. Also butter your hands. Press cutter firmly through the rice crispy treat, then use your hands to gently pop the treat out of the cutter. Place shaped treat on buttered foil or wax paper. Re-cover cookie cutter with butter before making next shape.
    • To shape by hand, butter your hands thoroughly. Mold the cereal as you would Play-Doh, on buttered foil or wax paper.
  • If you want to spice up the classic recipe, here are a few suggestions:
    • Throw chocolate or caramel or cinnamon chips into the mix (after the melted marshmallow mixture has been added to the cereal).
    • Put a layer of your favorite frosting on top.
    • Add sprinkles on top.
    • Replace crispy rice with another type of cereal...perhaps Fruity Pebbles, Coco Puffs, Cheerios, or Cinnamon Toast Crunch...feel free to experiment!
