Vegetables Which Are Regarded as Taboo
Some vegetables are regarded as prohibited foods in soma religions and cultures in the world. Here are some groups of people and religions that regard some vegetables not suitable for human consumption.
Any varieties of onion are believed to be unsuitable for human consumption by some Hindus and Buddhists because these vegetables are thought to excite damaging passions.
North Indian tradition considers onions taboo. This is possibly due to the influence of Jain traditions.
Fungi are also regarded as taboo food because fungi are eschewed as they grow at night. Although the Romans considered the mushroom a delicacy of the highest order and held it in high regard as food fit for Emperors.
Honey, which are produced by Honeybees, are regarded by some as taboo food. Some vegans also avoid honey as they would any other animal products.
Garlic, like onions, is considered taboo food among certain Hindu sects.
Carrots, potatoes, radish, turnips and other root crops are regarded as taboo in the Jain religion. In doing so kills the plant and they believe in ahimsa.
Traditionally, garlic, shallot and onion are prohibited among Buddhist and Hindus
Lettuce and butter beans are regarded taboo in Yazidism.
