Cooking diary #4: -The healthier alternative to coffee - Sugarless Matcha Green Tea Latte recipe (The story of my little guilty pleasure)
Just like I mentioned before in: "A shy hello: life is a strange thing (my introduction)" when I lived in the United Kingdom, I had one very special place to go to relax from all the city buzz. It was a lovely Japanese cafe in the Bullring's square. Eight years passed from the last time I've been there but I still remember the cozy decor, warm feeling of the family type atmosphere and always smiling chefs chatting with you while preparing a delicious meal. Sadly I do not have any pictures left to share with you from that lovely place, but there is one thing that is still with me - the recipe of my favorite guilty pleasure - The Matcha Green Tea Latte, that I used to love sipping while sitting in front of the window and watching the busy crowd outside.
When the first time my friend recommended this warm beverage to me I was really surprised since I never thought that anything with a word "Latte" in it can be mixed with a green tea. I gave it a try. This wonderful slightly bitter sweetish taste well blended with the softness of milk was something indescribable. I was hooked for life from the very first sip.
Today, you can order this goodness in the big chain coffee shops, but to be honest, I do not buy it there, I rather make it myself. For couple reasons really. First of all, the taste is not the same, way too sugary and no love involved in brewing it. Second and the most important I don't do that just for the respect to this beautiful memory of my little lovely "hideout".
Many years passed but even today I always have some quality Green tea powder in my cupboard.
Even though I did modify the recipe a little bit to be more waistline-friendly but the taste still remained just as wonderful. So every time when I feel like having a moment to myself I make a cup of warm memories.
The Sugarless Matcha Green Tea Latte recipe
Ingredients:
*1 cup light milk of your choice (cows, almond, soy or my favorite - coconut milk)
*1/2 tsp. green tea (matcha) powder
*1 Tbsp. hot (but not boiling) water
*1 to 3 Tsp of stevia
*The green tea powder or cinnamon to sprinkle (optional)
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan heat up milk with stevia until a small bubble starts to appear around the edges. Then take it off the hob and whisk it until the light foamy texture.
- In a cup combine matcha green tea powder and hot water. Whisk it until the powder is fully dissolved.
- When it is done, add already prepared milk.
- Sprinkle a little bit of green tea powder or cinnamon on top if you like.
Enjoy!

Thank you for receipe! I will try to do it at home. I think stevia can be replaced by sugar (it doesn't growth in our region)
Yes, actually originally there is sugar in the recipe instead of stevia so feel free to replace it :) I'm just using stevia since it is more "waistline - friendly".

Beautiful photography here to illustrate this post and it sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you for your lovely words ^.^
Coconut milk over everything!!!
Yerba mate and matcha are soo tasty - thanks for sharing also that cinnamon can mix well, I hadn't tried that.
Go for it, it's heavenly :)
Oh man, this looks really amazing. I've actually managed to cut down my coffee intake from 6 cups/day to 1/day, and have been looking for more alternatives to keep my tastebuds happy in the meantime, so this is super timely!
My biggest issue: I just LOVE the taste of coffee! I love matcha too- but I've never actually tried using the powder. I'll have to try this...
Six cups sounds pretty serious, glad to hear that you managed to reduce the intake. But I know what you mean, if you like the taste a lot it must be really tempting. Actually there is another alternative, I might make an article about it as well bit later on.
In any case, Green tea late is my little addiction, taste is wonderful just be careful with the amount of powder you put in, too much of it will make the drink bitter :)
ha 6 cups isn't even my worst in my lifetime!! But I'm breaking the habit... :)
