Hamburger is a type of sandwich made from a flat meat cut, usually from beef, which is placed into a bun. On top of the ketchup, various sauces such as ketchup and mayonnaise are added, as well as vegetables, usually tomatoes, onions, pickles and lettuce. It is customary to serve chips, potatoes, and onions in the side of the hamburger. Hamburger is named after the German city of Hamburg.

The burger was first introduced in Russia, where it was known as steak tartar. In the 15th century German sailors brought this food to Hamburg, Germany, where they invented a fried or fried version of the patties and hence its name. Around 1800 German immigrants brought this food to the United States.
