[FOOD IN KOREA 24] ICE ICE BABY

August is almost over, but there seem to be no signs of the weather cooling down. What can one do survive this hell hot and muggy land?! Well...when in Korea, one must do as the Koreans do and go for shaved ice!

One of the most popular places in Korea to get shaved ice is Sulbing, a chain bingsoo, or shaved ice, cafe. Shaved ice consists of... well shaved ice (duh!) and sweet ingredients such as fruits, syrup, and sweet milk . However, Sulbing actually uses a fine powdery ice (called snow ice, so will hereby refer to it as that). I much prefer it over the traditional ground up ice as it makes for a smoother melt-in-your-mouth texture.

The interior

The walls are decorated with the cute Sulbing logo and directions for how to eat their shaved ice: Eat the snow ice and sweet red bean paste together, but don't mix them. There was also a cute almost grammatically correct poem about "a sweet treat."

The wait

After ordering and paying at the register, we received a little pager that let us know when our order was ready for retrieval.

The anticipation as our friends got their ice first and started eating... but waiting is not an option with melting ice. All eyes on the chocolate cheesecake snow ice.

Finally! Our time to shine

We had ordered the mango grapefruit snow ice from the summer menu. It was topped with vanilla ice cream and came with a side of sweet milk to drizzle on top. The grapefruit tasted bitter to me, but other friends claimed that there was no trace of bitterness. The ice was as fluffy as I imagined it to be.

One more

Friends also got the melon snow ice. Can't vouch on the taste because I'm not into melon, but I love the presentation of this the most out of all the other menu items. I imagine it super refreshing and a treat for the melon lovers out there. Cutting up the melon, however, seemed to be quite a pain.

Friends decided to get another one. You can never have enough ice.

Last but not least,

Proof of completion.

Have a great day!

Those look so good. I think I would follow your lead and order the mango grapefruit also if I could.

They have the strawberry series as well, but strawberry season is over ;(

Would that be strawberry-mango flavor? Because that sounds delicious. Still working on getting you to 50 reputation. Keep on posting the good stuff, it will happen soon.

Yup! Also strawberry x strawberry and strawberry x cheesecake action. Thanks!

I love shaved ice!!! I can't make it so snowy but I have a hand crank machine and make it at home! Love your post! Thanks for sharing!

Ah, this post made me miss Korea again!!....

Excellent photos, @pearica! And a great job on writing up and illustrating this post overall. thumbs up! I look forward to more stories from Korea from you!

Thanks! There are many more adventures to come :)

That’s great to know; I’m looking forward to read about them! :) Do you know for how much longer you will be staying in South Korea? And what will you do afterwards?

No idea. I keep wavering between staying or going back home. As for what I'll do after... there's an awesome thing going on called mukbang. Check it out :))
