Cucumber Plant farming procedure

how the Fruit is Produced

Before cucumbers can produce fruit, the plants grow both male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers open first and grow in clusters of three to five, while the female flowers grow on a single stem. When successfully pollinated, the female flowers develop fruit at the flower base and the male flower drop off the plant. Male flowers outnumber female flowers 10 to 1. You should not be alarmed if a large number of flowers drop because these are the male flowers that have served their purpose.
Pollination

Honey bees are common pollinators for cucumber flowers, so large populations increase pollination success, while low populations can hinder fruit production. For good fruit production, the bees need to carry pollen from male to female flowers. Poor pollination can also cause misshapen fruit. Contrary to what some may believe, cucumbers and other cucurbits in the garden cannot cross pollinate, as the female flowers are only fertilized by males of the same species. Varieties within each species can cross-pollinate, but it does not affect the current year's fruit, only the seeds.
Failure to Set Fruit

If cucumber plants fail to flower, they cannot set fruit. Some common pest problems that affect flowering include infestation of nematodes. The root knot nematodes feed on plant roots, stunt growth and reduce yield. Improper spacing can also lead to poor fruit production. When cucumber plants are too close or too far away, it can affect pollination, and plants may produce more foliage and fewer flowers and fruit.
Continuous Fruit Production

To encourage ongoing fruit production, you need to pick cucumbers when they are still immature. Mature cucumbers are large, yellow and contain hard seeds; these are inedible and if you allow the fruit to fully ripen, the plant halts fruit production. So the more you harvest, the more cucumber you can expect to grow in one season. Harvest cucumbers based on use. Harvest pickling cucumbers when they reach 1 to 6 inches long, slicing cucumbers at 6 to 10 inches long and cucumber for regular dills at 3 to 4 inches long.
