Hey,

I'm @steemcake and today I want to show you a classic German pastry:

"Nut wedges (Nussecken)"

"Nussecken" are a classic German pastry from a shortcrust with a layer of jam or macaroon and some nuts on top. You can buy it in Germany in every bakery.

A German Schlager singer called "Guildo Horn" even dedicated a song to nut wedges.
In his song "Guildo hat euch lieb!" he sings:

"If the stars weren't so far away
And from there I'd send you the proof of my love
Nut wedges and raspberry ice cream."

He was the German entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1998. At the close of voting, it had received 86 points, placing 7th in a field of 25.

What you need:

The Dough

  • 2 1/2 cups (300g) flour
  • 1 package baking powder
  • 2/3 cup (130g) sugar
  • 2 packages vanilla sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup (130g) butter or margarine

The Topping

  • 1 cup (200g) butter or margarine
  • 1 cup (200g) sugar
  • 2 packages vanilla sugar
  • 4 tbsp milk
  • 400g hazelnuts, grated
  • 3 tbsp jam of your choice

The Glaze

  • 100 g dark chocolate

How to do it:

  • Preheat oven to ~ 345° F (175° C).

  • Mix flour with baking powder, sugar, vanilla sugar, eggs and butter.

  • Roll the dough on a sheet of baking paper.

  • For the topping melt butter with sugar, vanilla sugar, milk and the hazelnuts in a pot.

  • Spread the jam on top, then the nut topping.

  • Bake at ~ 345° F (175° C) for 30 minutes. Cool completely.
