Apple Swan - Tutorial

in #food8 years ago (edited)

Here is a quick tutorial how to create a swan from an apple. It is not very difficult but everyone will be impressed.

  1. Cut the apple in a slight angle, right through the apple core

  2. Save two seeds for the eyes later

  3. Now you have two halves. Take the bigger one. It still has the bottom attached and place it faced down on a cutting board

  4. We need to place two butter knives perpendicular to the bottom of the apple

  5. Now we can carefully cut down along one side of the apple core, using the knives as spacers, till the knife touches the two other knives placed perpendicular to the apple

  6. Then use the spacers as a guide to cut in from the side. When the two cuts meet you just remove this part.

  7. Now we have to cut an equal piece away from the other side

  8. We can use those pieces to cut out three more shape wedges.

  9. Repeat the process two more times and stack the pieces together. The effect is a beautifully layered wing.

  10. To make place for the head we have to cut carefully into the front and put the piece out so that we have a clean hole.

  11. At this point we can go and grab the other half of the apple and place it between the butter knives like before.
But this time we are going to use them just as spacers for sliding off the bottom.

  12. Look for a piece that looks like a heart but flattened on top.

  13. Then you have to do three cuts:
    - one angled cut to form the head
    - one horizontal cut to form the neck
    - one slide to cut off the bottom.

  14. After that we can clean it up a bit. Just use your knife to slice off the edges.
Now place the apple seeds where you think the eyes should be. Then use the side of a butter knife to press them in position

  15. When you think that the eyes look good, simply drop the neck in the place and you are done! You created a beautiful and creative apple swan!
