SOUR (5-minute Freewrite)

The milk was sour. The tomatoes were rotten. The lemon meringue pie was black pudding.

She slammed the refrigerator door shut. A puff of rusty dust blew away in the stiff breeze.

It was always more difficult to find food after the apocalypse. Everyone knew that. Which is why many people were now dead. And also why those that thought ahead were still alive.

Three months into the End, however, and each day was a challenge. She had to scrape by on freeze dried rations and canned water stored in the bunker.

"Forget the bunker," Tony said. He was now her ever-present traveling companion. They met when he broke into her secure bunker, forced himself on her, and bound her to him in a strange caveman-drags-Jane way through this new world. This new Hell.

Now they were walking the waste lands somewhere between Omaha, Nebraska and Cleveland, Ohio. "Cleveland Rocks!" was the only redeeming quality she could muster about this awful trip.

It would end soon enough. She was certain that either Tony would tire of her, the scraps they found would run out, or the elements would have their way with her.
