Cheap hobby
Doesn’t get any cheaper than free. Lately I’ve taken to “bag gardening” The plants love it. Each one gets its own bag.
The bags are repurposed from crystal salt used in the water softener. The water from the well is very hard and requires a salt softener system.
The bags are very sturdy thick plastic. They would have to be to withstand deterioration from holding salt. Wash them out thoroughly, of course.
I take soil from the ground and mix it with aged cow manure from neighbor’s cows and bake it at 220F for 2 hours to kill bad bacteria which can grow unchecked in containers like a flowerpot or in this case a bag.
This year there is squash, watermelon and sweet potatoes in the bags.

Cool – and much easier to harvest. Especially with potatoes, you don't have to dig deep and search through the bottom. By the way, are you familiar with straw bale cultivation? Similar principle, but without soil: then you don't even need to wash the potatoes in the end... ;-))
