If I may put my two cents on this, I think nobody can completely let go the past, because our past is what makes us who we are today, but a palimpsest is a parchment from which someone scraped out the writings for rewriting over it, and this is a bit like the process of let the details of the past go, keeping what the past made of us. ;)
