Candy Cane Beets and a Veggie Garden update!
Morning, Steem friends!
Its been a few days since Ive been on here because I had my very first selling event for MadPotters. It was at a succulent nursery in North County, San Diego and I couldnt have asked for a better first run at this being a vendor thing. Ill post about that later. Today is a garden update!
So first up, here is a quickie video of me pulling out a beet from our garden. Its huge!!! Do you do anything with the greens? Im sure theres an amazing recipe out there.....
Now the cool thing about these beets is that we bought a rainbow pack of seeds. Check out this one's candy stripes!
Close up. Here's a little tip - the less red you see, the less "beet-y" itll taste! Love these for the look but I think I prefer the really dark ones for their taste.
Just look at how much the spinach has grown in just over a week! You can barely see the zombies now. Guess they have a second job now, helping me judge growth week over week.
I had to go to Home Depot for cement but somehow ended up in the garden section instead. While everything in the raised bed has been started from seed, we decided to add some herbs that have already been flourishing. They were on sale, we can use them immediately and my all time favorite excuse is that they were begging to be saved from the Big Box store. This one is Greek Oregano.
Here we've got Chocolate Mint. Never heard of it before, but the smell is incredible. I cant wait to make tea! If you've got a good idea for a recipe with it, I'd love to hear it!!!
And last but not least - three different types of cherry tomatoes. They looked the healthiest at the store, and who doesn't like a little variety? LOL. We plan on using these ones as mother plants. Once they're feeling strong and happy after their transplant, we'll start taking cuttings to hopefully grow out a whole mess of vines.
Well, thats it for now! Its going to be time to turn over our garden box and plant new seeds. What have you got going for spring???
Happy Potting!
Christie
PS - Thank you to @lenasveganliving for hosting the Fruits and Veggies Monday Challenge, which has inspired me to post garden updates. Im proud of the growing we've done so far, but we are still newbies so it feels awesome to be able to share our progress and get positive feedback from somewhere other than our tastebuds. :D

thank you so much!! my first tipuvote :D arent they amazing? I cant wait to see what other colors we pull up. The package had some golden beets on it too....
I bet they are gorgeous as well and delicious too! Post some photos after harvesting.
What a nice garden. I can not wait for warm weather when I can grow my garden outside again! NICE HAT! Love it! Not sure about what to do with the greens from the raddish as for eating, but you coukd compost it and reuse it in your garden to grow more delicious fruuts and veggies!
Thank you so much! Part of the reason for moving to SoCal was for the growing weather all year long. HEHE Hat was custom made by @nutinbutdatruth for a little project he's got going on....stay tuned for more on that soon. Compost is a great idea!!
Well i love it. Wish i had known this earlier and got myself a hat. I am following him and you now. Hopefully i dont miss the next oportunity!
we appreciate your support! shouldnt be too long before he's up and running, and comments like yours definitely help light a fire under his ass to get moving :P
Haha
Nice post! I am so excited to get my garden going this year (if only the snow would stop!) I've got tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus, onions, basil, and a whole lot of peppers for this season.
i moved to so.cal for the yearly growing season, lol. asparagus! i want to grow that next!
Asparagus takes a few seasons to really get going, but it is such an awesome thing in the garden because it comes up so early! You get to be eating from your garden the same time you are planting all your other stuff.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!! These are really beautiful!! CONGRATULATIONS my Dear!!! 🍒 🍌🍑🌿🍍🍓🍇

thank you!! we're really proud of the garden so far. california weather makes growing easy!
I am very happy for you too my Dear :)
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ! A WELL-EARNED AWARD!

wahoo!! thank you!!! much appreciated xoxo I love this challenge - its awesome to see all the responses to our garden.
I am very happy for you my Dear, keep up the good job 🌸💖🌸
That's amazing, I love it! Great job!
thank you so much!! we're pretty proud of our first garden :D
You should be, it's the result of your hard work! :)
Even as pretty as your beets are, I still can't eat them... They make me gag. Rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, and radishes are no problem, but beets... Yuck! Your spinach looks great! It's about time to harvest that, you cannot wait too long here is socal or it will bolt to seed and get very bitter. If you love Spinach, in the summer you can grow "New Zealand Spinach" which handles the heat much better.
wow! I have not seen this before !! Congratulations! you will have a wonderful harvest
The way you incorporated gifs into this article was brilliant. I've never seen a Candy Striped Beet before. Very cool article. Thanks for taking the time to make it!
