A lot more dissonance results than distance, the quora one which is almost the only applicable one I skipped over because just from the start it is longwinded and probably piss me off. The rest seem to have something to do with geography etc. I am a skimmer and shall not apologise.
In my search it appears it has to do with peoples' perception of a distance between 2 points. So, apparently it's just a regular old guess in other words, though I do see also a "Cognitive geography" defined in my search.
