Refers to the unintended consequence of further publicizing information by trying to have it censored. Instead of successfully removing the information from the public, it becomes even more widely available than before as a backlash against the censorship attempt.

Wow, I have heard of the term Streisand Effect and did not know the history of it, thanks for that knowyourmeme link.
I heard someone use it in a different context yesterday, and I pulled the Streisand Effect argument
