THEM vs THEY   

There are many more examples like those above, in addition to the “official” findings of the peer-approved science community.    If all these varieties of life exist here on Earth, then what must be hiding out there in the universe?   The famous Drake equation is an effort to mathematically determine the probability of intelligent alien civilizations not only existing, but existing at the same time as ours.    

The Drake Equation:

The numbers make a compelling argument for the affirmative, to say the least.    

Here it is broken down into its component parts:   

 N = The number of civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable. 

R* = The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life. 

fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems. 

ne = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.

 fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears. 

fi = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.

 fc = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space. 

L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.   

I won’t bore you with the calculations, suffice it to say that the conclusion based on our current knowledge suggests that more than 12,000 advanced (stone age and up) civilizations exist in our GALAXY alone.    

The great astronomer and cultural icon Carl Sagan even went so far as to claim as many as 1 million civilizations might exist within our own galaxy.    So it should come as no surprise to anyone that beyond our own wonderfully, frighteningly diverse planet life, there is more. Much more.    

And “they” are here.      

Who are “they”? The answer depends on who you ask. It also depends on what you mean by “they”. 

There are “they” as in alien visitors, and there is “they” meaning the earthly organizations that control the progress and knowledge base of human civilization. Sometimes the “theys” cross paths. Sometimes they work against each other, other times in concert. It can become confusing quickly, which I suspect is intentional.   

 For our purposes, we will make a definite distinction between the “they’s”.   

THEY will refer to terrestrial organization (human).    

THEM will refer to extra-terrestrials.
