Stranger Danger

So the other day, I had to take my car to the Honda Center for a recall on the airbags. The receptionist told me that the process would take about an hour and a half to do, so I requested for a shuttle that they offer to get dropped off and picked up at my friend's place.

After they dropped me off, my friend and I decided to walk to the liquor store and then to a Dominos to pick up a pizza. On the way there, Honda called me and told me that my car was ready and asked if I still needed a shuttle to pick me up. I said yea, but gave them the address to the Dominos that we were going to. Before the shuttle got there my friend and I were able to eat the whole pizza with no rush (everything just seemed to be flowing nicely that day). Once the shuttle arrived, the driver called me and asked where I was exactly. I told him that I could see him and would walk up to the van that he was driving. My friend said he would walk home so we parted ways and I walked towards the vehicle.

I gave a friendly wave at the guy, he acknowledged, and I hopped in. We said hi to each other and I started small conversation (i.e. "How's it going?" "How's your day so far."). He was very short and didn't reciprocate any questions that I asked him. (i.e. "good"). No harm though. I just assumed that this guy just likes to keep to himself, which he did come off that way. So I left it at that... for about 15 awkward quiet seconds.

Now, keep in mind, this guy never asked me anything, at all. He had no idea who I was nor did he try to know who I was. I, on the other hand, knew I was in the right vehicle because he was driving a Honda van and was wearing a Honda jumpsuit. Plus, I confirmed his name before I got in, just in case. You never know. But he never confirmed if I was the right guy that he should be picking up.

So, to mess with him and liven up the mood a bit, I then asked with a sincere and concerned look, "So... Do you normally just pick up random strangers anywhere?

His face was priceless. He was shocked and worried at the same time. Immediately, I bursted into a smile and short laugh and reassured him that I was just kidding and that he picked up the right guy. He laughed but I could tell he was still a little worried. So I described to him what was wrong with my car to reassure him. He eased up. We sat quiet for a short while again but, to my surprise, he later initiated a conversation with me.

I wonder if the small prank had anything to do with it?

Either way, the lesson to be learned here is to be careful when allowing a stranger into your car. They might just get you. And got him, I did.
