RE: Importing Daz Studio Characters into Unity - Use them in your game... Unoptimized version

in #gamedev6 years ago

They changed their licensing again? I stopped caring after they said "Pay us loads of money then be very careful which assets you buy because anything not made by us still can't be used even after paying us that money".

If I recall correctly their decimator was an awesome piece of kit but stopped working in newer versions of Daz. Again, this just made me stop caring about them. For years I have been using Poser as the epitome of bad saying things like "This character looks as lifeless, dead and bland as something from Poser" but when they announced the GameDev version and announced that they actually remove hidden polygons as part of the export process I got very excited about Poser for the first time in years. Now if only Daz would bring that feature over from Poser then I might be tempted to give them another look again.

An issue I have with "artists" these days is that more and more seem to simply not care about doing their jobs and are just lazy. Back when I learned about character building from a guy who built models for SEGA and Disney I was taught to adjust each vertex to perfection and that I must find every single hidden poly and get rid of it. "If it's not shown then it doesn't belong in the model". Nowadays they import the entire body then place a shirt over the body and cover the shirt with a jacket and say "job done". So lazy, so bad... that was the number one reason why I haven't given UMA the time of day since it was first released. It is also why I never bought any license from Daz since they don't do hidden poly removal. Poser has me very excited for that one feature alone but I have one big issue with Poser and that is that, well, it is Poser... 😜😒

Anyway, it seems I have to start following you as you seem to be clued up on Daz. Reading your posts might just save me the torture of having to go hunt for the info from their site ;) I'm very new to steemit and tried to see more posts from you but the only option I could find was "follow" and "mute". I couldn't find a "more posts by" type link.

I do reviews of Daz Products from time to time which I resteem on my @seductiveart account which I created so I could find such things easier. It has some NSFW content as well, not much but some and clearly marked.

So the Daz related stuff is there.

The Daz Original License I purchased was not Per Game. I saw some other artists that it listed Per Game. Daz was not one of those.

I've read that you can use anything you purchased as sprites or still images to your hearts content without a special interactive license. The interactive license applies to 3d models, morphs, etc used.

So if you want to make a roguelike or some other game where sprites will do you might be able to pull that off without an expensive license.

Well THAT certainly caught my attention. I never actually thought of that. I was about to make a demo using sprites but I can't distribute the demo with the sprites I don't own and I can't make sprites myself by hand so I intended to take an animated character or two that I own the IP of and just capture them at various phases in their animations. Why didn't I think of doing the same thing with Daz? That gives me such a higher selection of characters / looks to choose from!

Thanks for that bit of inspiration! 👍
